Brilliant Bamboo CIC was formed in 2023 and from that have pursued our mission and aims. In this financial year we have done this through a collaborative project with Middle-port Matters as part of their Discover Middleport UKSPF funding. We offered a Discover Middleport and Bamboo project offering residents and visitors to be hands-on with bamboo in workshops, and co-design an artwork and bench for their local community. This was named Sandra's Story and later toured to Sir Harold Hillier Gardens for 40,000 visitors to see. We also hosted a Bamboo Block Party to cele-brate in March 2024. Two projects funded by High Street Accelerator through Stoke-on-Trent City Council. 1. We created two murals for Stoke Town with two artists, Reiko Kaneko and Rob Fenton, with local connections to explore the connection to bamboo and local communities heritage in surface pattern, called Brilliant Botanicals. These now remain for the community to enjoy. 2. We developed and implemented the first phase of our Brilliant Bamboo Brownfield Parklet, creating a space for people and nature in the heart of the town, on a demolished factory site owned by a retailer. This included skill share and development for artists and makers locally, events for the community of residents and neighbours, and an invitation to others to help us imagine the parklet together for the future. We began our education and engagement work funded by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council providing fun, family-friendly events in Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre with various partners. We had 1,432 people attend or take part in our work (excluding. Harold Hillier exhibition). Offered over 110 days of freelance employment Supported 18 volunteer days. We are really excited to see how our work continues to evolve and grow from this exciting year for us and the community we work with and for.
In this period, we undertook a debrief with artists and makers as part of our masterclass series to see what change had occurred for them and what might be next for our support and collaboration. We also began our consultation around our Brilliant Bamboo Brownfield Parklet where an experienced participatory consultant asked five questions: What have you found here today? What has surprised you? What ideas do you have for the site? What would make you feel welcome here? What can the Parklet mean for Stoke? The consultation used creative methods for conversations and for recording the thoughts of those who took part. We shared the findings, which were completed in November 2025, online and have used the suggestions to develop the Parklet in terms of planting, areas, and when applying for funds for the project. We also hear from people through our social media, take direct feedback at events, and work together with all stakeholders, including funders, to ensure we evolve our work in line with our aims and in response to community needs.
The director who leads the company has received self-employed remuneration for the period for the work on the specific projects that are qualifying services of £10,320. Currently there are no other directors that delivery qualifying services for the CIC.
