Rhythm of Life Therapies CIC is a small social enterprise providing Music Therapy to people of all ages in Pembrokeshire and West Wales. Our Music Therapists are fully trained (Masters level, USW) and registered with the relevant professional bodies (BAMT, HCPC). Most of our directors have experience of working with the most vulnerable children in our community whether through schools or the NHS. In April 2024 we were awarded funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to run our Safe and Sound Music Therapy Project to support children in community settings in the Pembroke area. The project provided weekly child-centred music therapy sessions to children aged 6 -11 years old and ran from May 2024 to the end of February 2025. The project delivered 313 sessions to 38 children in 4 settings. All the children and young people who took part in the project engaged positively with the therapeutic process and learnt strategies to manage their emotions and build resilience to help them going forward. During the sessions many children disclosed protection issues for the first time. Our skilled therapists were able to support the young people through Safeguarding procedure and reporting whilst also providing follow up therapy. People around the children noticed differences in how they regulated themselves, how they chose to play and how they interacted with others. Two schools with children involved in the project have sought additional funding to continue with our Music Therapy intervention as they view it so invaluable to their pupils’ wellbeing.
During the project the music therapists consulted with numerous community stakeholders including parents, teachers, head teachers, speech and language therapists, children’s service providers, friends and siblings; and were able to strengthen many supportive networks around the children. Our music therapy sessions are guided by the child/young person with regards content, pace and objective. Our programmes have been structured to include regular intervals dedicated to collecting feedback and evaluations from the young people and children we work with, alongside the views of other stakeholders involved in the project. We use this resource to adapt our projects to better meet the needs of the children and young people who use the service. We have developed a range of evaluation tools so that all our clients feel able to contribute and help shape future projects.
