Company activities and impact

Impact monitoring This year we delivered a total of 114 sessions supporting 71 individuals, including sessions of our new ‘Climbing Club’, a supportive club designed for young people who have been at our sessions for a number of years and are working towards independence. These consisted of 17 sessions for adults with mental health conditions, 17 Climbing Club sessions and 68 sessions for autistic children and young people. Our impact monitoring found that: 95% of parents of young people reported an improvement in their child’s mental health since attending Climbing Calm. 75% of parents of young people reported an improvement in their child’s social skills and relationships since attending Climbing Calm. 75% of parents of young people reported an improvement in their own mental health and wellbeing since attending Climbing Calm. 100% of adult participants felt less socially isolated since attending Climbing Calm. 6 attendees formed relationships through Climbing Club and made arrangements for peer interaction outside of Climbing Calm. Feedback from Parents and attendees "The courses you run are transformative for young people and have had huge positive impact on E and our family more widely. Thank you so much for the work you do.” “He has really enjoyed it every time we’ve been and that staff are all so great with him.” "He had a brilliant time and benefited in so many ways” “Many many thanks for the new passion you've given her and all the calming sensory regulation it's provided” “Your endeavours have made a huge difference to me and my family, supporting us over the past few very difficult years. Caspian is a friendly calm face every time we come to Climbing Calm, and we are delighted that it will continue into 2025. Georgina keeps us up to date with everything and the supporting team of therapists have all been invaluable.” “Climbing climb has been transformational for us as a family. I also really appreciate the kindness and understanding and support you have provided while I am undergoing through breast cancer treatment which is of course another dimension of stress and anxiety for us as a family.” “He enjoys the routine of the sessions and the opportunity to practice climbing. He looks forward to the session each week. Getting active is great for his wellbeing and is something he enjoys. The sessions have had a big positive impact. He is typically shy around others but these sessions help him to come out of his shell which benefits his social skills.” “It’s a lovely calming atmosphere and learning new skills and pushing myself and nice for us as sibling group to attend something together. We see the same people each week and instructors are very welcoming and kind and really want to support and guide.” “I have enjoyed climbing higher up the walls I am proud of myself. I have some friends at climbing now.” “N really looks forward to each session and is proud of his achievements. He rarely socialises outside of school so this is a great opportunity to meet new friends in a safe environment. He doesn’t seek to make friends and struggles to make friends he enjoys the companionship at climbing without the pressure or forced conversation.” “He has overcome fears, climbing the walls! Safe space, hot chocolate! Not giving up when things get tough! Leaves in a positive mindset which is otherwise difficult to achieve. Enjoys lots of praise and encouragement from staff and Caspian and his family including his sister. He takes away these skills and allows him to regulate better during the week.” “I come to the sessions happy and leave happy” "I like being around other children, the climbing” “We feel like a normal family” “It's a safe space outside of school where I can decompress. I love climbing and it helps build my confidence. I feel much calmer afterwards.” “It's really helpful to have something regular that I like to do outside of school. I'm developing new skills and whilst I find it hard to be part of a group it's good for me to experience it.” “G might not say he has made friends at Climbing Calm however there was a little girl who asked G if he was coming to start the session and he got up and walked down with the group. This would have meant a lot to G that she acknowledged him and felt included. He enjoys spending time with Caspian, he has a very gentle and caring manner with all children he interacts with.” “I believe calm climbing has a huge impact on G’s confidence and self esteem, and belief in himself , and these lay with him throughout the week.” “Being able to do rope climbing which I prefer to bouldering. I enjoy challenging myself to climb increasingly difficult climbs. I find it difficult to work with other young people but I have tried to do this at climbing climb. Caspian and the other group leaders have helped with this as they understand my needs. I have got back into climbing thanks to climbing calm and now also go bouldering independently as a result. This helps with managing my anxiety and helps build my strength and resilience.” “There is one young person I often climb with ...we are a similar level and like to try out the same routes. My mum has also become friends with this person's mother which is positive too. Generally it is a supportive group...including the adult group which attends at the same time which works well. Having the staff from the climbing centre support the climbing is really good too and they have helped with technique a lot. My confidence has increased and my climbing has improved which is good.” “It is really good now that the climbing club group has been established and that it runs the same time as the adults. Thank you for all the support to us as a family since I got unwell in autumn 2024. Support for booking us onto the course has been really appreciated” Feedback from adults “Having a space to do an activity that's enjoyable to distract my mind from the negative thoughts I experience. It has provided me with routine and enjoyment. Something I can enjoy with out worrying about cost. Something that gets me moving and active as I otherwise wouldn't be.” “I have developed some confidence is communicating with others. I have something positive and enjoyable to talk to others about” “I have gained confidence and my fears have decreased” Impact Statement “My niece has been accessing the sessions on a Thursday. It is something we look forward to each week and I have seen a big change in her. She has found a love of climbing, something which we thought we would never see. She is committed to it, which having ADHD and Autism is rare, she usually does something a few times and that’s enough. The staff and other climbers have made her feel part of a community, again something that does not happen in real life. Her differences mean she is very isolated outside of climbing by others who have no patience or understanding of her condition. She is now working towards completing an award in climbing, an actual real-life achievement that she can show others. She is very proud of being able to tackle the harder climbs, even though they are not really, she feels a sense of achievement and pride. These are things she does not often feel outside of our family. The climbing sessions have also had a positive impact on the whole family as D has a physical activity on a Thursday which takes a few hours in the evening. I take her climbing then we go for food afterwards so her brother and mum and dad have a good break. This is only possible because of climbing calm. D looks forward to the sessions every week so there is no battle to get her to come and believe me there are many battles to get D to do things. Climbing Calm has had a positive impact on D’s mental well-being and also and given some quality time for all the family. Again, the sense of community and safety she feels is so important for her well-being. She trusts all the adults, esp. Caspian who help her in the group and she has made some connections with the other climbers albeit just for the sessions. Social interactions are something she struggles with and she has had some situations at climbing calm that she has had to overcome but the staff have helped her understand the social situation and taught her to climb alongside and trust others. Climbing calm is an important part of our routine and gives children like D a positive experience in a world that can be unkind and discriminative of people with disabilities, especially hidden ones. We as a family are so thankful for the opportunity it provides for D to not be judged and to achieve. We fully support Climbing Calm and what they do.”

Consultation with stakeholders

We consult with parents every 8-12 weeks to find out what we can do to further improve the sessions. We also invite ongoing feedback from the participants themselves, who shape the sessions.
