School Meal Support The Challenge Food poverty and insecurity affect a significant proportion of children in our local community. Many families face barriers to accessing affordable, nutritious meals, whether due to financial constraints, employment precarity, or gaps in support. When children arrive at school hungry, their ability to learn, concentrate, and engage is compromised. Research consistently shows that proper nutrition is foundational to educational achievement, attendance, wellbeing, and long-term outcomes. What We Do Skillz within provides low-cost, high-quality meal support to children in schools across our locality. Our service ensures that no child goes hungry during the school day and removes a major barrier to learning. We work in partnership with schools to deliver meals that are: - Nutritionally balanced and prepared to the highest standards - Affordable and accessible to families in financial hardship - Culturally responsive and inclusive - Delivered with dignity, creating a normalised experience where no child is singled out Social Impact & Outcomes Our school meal support delivers measurable social value across multiple dimensions: - Educational outcomes: Children who receive regular, nutritious meals show improved attendance, concentration, and engagement in lessons. Schools report positive feedback from teachers on pupil behaviour and academic performance. - Health & wellbeing: Access to nutritious food reduces the physical and psychological impact of food insecurity. Children benefit from improved energy levels, concentration, and emotional resilience. - Family financial relief: By removing the cost of school meals, we reduce financial pressure on families, freeing up limited resources for other essentials such as housing, heating, and other necessities. - Community cohesion: Shared mealtimes strengthen peer relationships and foster belonging, particularly for children experiencing social isolation or disadvantage. - Dignity & inclusion: Our approach ensures that all children can access meals without stigma. This is crucial in maintaining self-esteem and social inclusion during a formative period of development. Looking Forward We remain committed to expanding access to affordable, nutritious meals across our community. Our goal is to ensure that every child has the foundation, good nutrition, to thrive educationally, socially, and personally. School meal support is not a luxury; it is a fundamental investment in breaking the cycle of poverty and enabling all children to reach their potential.
We have spoken with students across our schools through informal conversations, focus groups, and feedback sessions. These discussions have been central to understanding what students value in meal provision and what barriers they face. We listen not just to what students say about the meals themselves, but to how they experience food, community, and dignity at school.
