Company activities and impact

The company has organised fortnightly meetings for black and brown men who want to develop their scriptwriting skills. Ominira Writers CIC meetings are open to the public. The meeings include "check-in" and "check-out" sessions allowing attendees to talk about themselves in a supportive setting. During each meeting, attendees are led through writing exercises which are dissected by the whole group. Anyone who seeks feedback on a work in progress is able to hear his work read aloud and commented on by the group. In October 2024, two short scripts by group members were performed free of charge at Streatham Tate Library, during Black History Month to an audience derived from the target community. The audience were able to engage with the themes through a formal Question and Answer session at the end of each of the performances. We continue to work with Black and Brown men in our fortnightly meetings to develop their dramatic writing skills. We have recently had two members have their plays performed at Park Theatre and Royal Court Theatre respectively. Both plays had formal Question and Answer sessions with the audiences of the target community after they were performed.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company's primary stakeholders are the attendees to the Ominira Writers meetings. We ask these people to provide feedback on their experience of each session. One recurring request was for Ominira to invite actors to attend a session so that the writers could hear their work performed by professionals. This suggestion is being acted upon and a session is being organised where actors will be encouraged to attend. Secondary stakeholders are the wider community who attend Ominira performances. Following the October 2024 performances, an audience question and answer session was filmed and later posted online. The prevailing theme from the audience feedback was requests from individuals to join Ominira sessions, and invitations were duly extended. Stakeholders have expressed interest in contributing to an Ominira Writers showcase of plays around a topical theme of importance to the target community.
