The Odiham Community Interest Company (OCIC) was established in August 2022 to enable the community to buy, repair and reopen the 500-year old Grade 2 listed The Bell public house in Odiham, Hampshire. The Bell had closed during Covid and was threatened with being turned into housing, ending its several centuries at the heart of community life and putting at risk its historic fabric. OCIC purchased The Bell on 3 January 2025 during the 2024-25 financial year. An extensive programme of repairs and refurbishment was begun to ensure the safety of The Bell’s structure and fittings and that the business would meet all the health and safety and other legal requirements related to the operation of a licenced hospitality business. On Tuesday 10th February 2026, less than six months after the company’s 31 August 2025 year end, the Bell re-opened as a licenced, community-owned pub. Community feedback has been very positive since the re-opening and validated OCIC’s belief that having The Bell owned by the community would protect its future as a pub, as a listed building and as a significant contributor to the village’s sense of community. The re-opening has helped maintain the support and enthusiasm of the community for the eventual full restoration and re-opening of the whole building.
The primary stakeholders are the members of the Odiham Community Interest Group (OCIG). This is a group of persons who might reasonably be regarded as having an existing and common interest with each other and the affairs of the Odiham Community Interest Company (OCIC), and in what is done with the proceeds arising from any investment in OCIC. Examples of such people are those who are: - resident, own or lease a property in the electoral ward of Odiham; - are a director, trustee, partner, member, employee, owner or operator of a business, charity, club, association or have another other link to an organisation registered in or for the benefits of the electoral ward of Odiham; or; - have a historic connection to the electoral ward of Odiham (e.g. used to go to Odiham schools, were previously posted at RAF Odiham). Consultation with primary stakeholders has continued to be by several routes, including a general meeting of shareholders on 15 July 2025 to review progress during the year 2024/25 and shareholder newsletters. We had a strong presence at events such the Odiham Food Festival 26 August 2024, the Bands in the Bury music festival on June 29th 2024 and the church summer fete, had articles in the parish magazine, posted regular updates on social media, and enjoyed strong support from Odiham Parish Council in its communications with residents. Together theses provided many additional opportunities for consultation and resultant feedback. Feedback that has been supportive but questioning of the scheme's viability has continued to be of particular value in challenging and helping to modify assumptions and ambitions even as the project continues. For example, ensuring the ability to pay by cash for people whose circumstances make this the preferred or only option is one example of how OCIC has amended its original plans to ensure it maximises the ability of everyone in the community to be part of this community project.
