Sunny Skies continues to deliver a variety of opportunities for adults with learning disabilities. Over the past financial year, we have been operating across three sites: a cafe, a workshop, and an outdoor space. The cafe continues to be a great environment for those we support to learn many valuable work and communication skills. We also support our volunteers in learning money skills, building their confidence in the workplace, and becoming more independent in a space that is nurturing and inclusive of all. Opportunities at the cafe give a voice to those with mental health issues and/or learning disabilities alongside a valued physical presence within their community. This enables our volunteers to access the social interaction they deserve and to feel valued in society for their abilities, rather than being noticed for their disabilities. Not only is the cafe valuable for the members of Sunny Skies, but it also benefits the wider community. We hold weekly community events for charities and displaced groups; for example, on Wednesdays, we run a group called ‘Winner, Winner, Community Dinner’. This is for older people who are living with dementia or isolation. We are passionate about supporting people's mental health and are looking for other opportunities to support the community. At our workshop, we support the members of Sunny Skies Enterprise to sell and promote items at the cafe that have been made by adults with disabilities. The volunteers at Sunny Skies make weekly deliveries of flower arrangements for local businesses in Melton Mowbray. On occasions such as Valentine's Day and Mother’s Day, we take orders for flower arrangements. We have started to develop our outdoor space. This year, we received funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which will fund a member of staff’s salary for three years. We continue to apply for grants and funding to sustain and develop new projects, increasing opportunities for Sunny Skies members. Our outdoor space ‘Sunny Space’ is becoming an increasingly popular part of Sunny Skies and is blossoming into an area where we can run daily sessions, e.g. conservation, horticulture, flower arranging and general maintenance. We have also received funding for an outdoor gym. We wanted to promote outdoor exercise in an inclusive, accessible space.
The members of Sunny Skies have developed valuable work skills, which parents and carers have said have enabled them to become increasingly independent, with improvements in confidence and self-esteem. By creating an environment where adults with learning disabilities are supported to learn new skills in a dynamic and progressive environment, a positive social impact on the community is made. We create a space for mental and physical well-being that enables its members to be seen as a valued, positive presence in the town. Furthermore, other community members in need are invited to participate in these activities, furthering integration and overall community well-being. We have responded to all members' requests by providing opportunities of their choice, including singing sessions, making music videos of them in the cafe, and posting them on social media. Inviting groups in for events and discounted meals for veterans and the vulnerable. Starting a drama session so that they can put on a show at the end of the year. Offering days out. Holding seasonal events, e.g. pumpkin picking and carving.
