Company activities and impact

The company runs East African music and culture workshops and performances for the community to explore and connect. We ran one successful workshop in Hotspur primary school and Chillingham Road primary school of Newcastle upon Tyne where children could listen to East African music with demonstration of several indigenous instruments after which the students were able to explore East African musical instruments. It reached over 250 children. At Hotspur Primary school the workshop was followed by an outdoor performance for the school summer festival celebrating diversity reaching to the school wider community including students and their parents. It increased crosscultural knowledge and awareness and gave them a sense of achievement to be able to play an instrument they had probably never encountered before. Nyatiti NyaDala CIC worked with Cultural Spring and Autism Able in a series of instrument making workshops with autistic young adults to make peke instruments which is a percussive handheld instrument made from recycled material such as bottle caps and clothes hangers. It increased the participants' concentration and sense of togetherness. At the end of the series the participants got to keep their instrument and perform with it at the Southshield Summer parade. Nyatiti NyaDala CIC also took part in the Ocean Road Mela festival in Southshield where 2 peke making workshop sessions were offered to the parade’s visitors. 10 visitors benefited from the workshop and kept their instruments. At Cobalt Studios, Nyatiti NyaDala CIC used East African and handpan music to enhance wellbeing to the community of Newcastle upon Tyne and audience of the venue.
