Company activities and impact

Barbers Against Prostate Cancer utilises trusted barber relationships to raise awareness about prostate cancer by setting up pop-up barbershops and offering free haircuts to individuals with a prostate aged 40 and over by providing grooming services and health education to men who typically avoid traditional healthcare messaging. We conducted multiple events throughout the year, distributed accessible educational materials about symptoms and screening, and connected numerous men with local healthcare providers. Through partnerships with Macmillan Cancer Support and Hairforee 1, we secured grants for equipment and supplies, ensuring professional yet accessible services. Our initiative creates safe spaces for men to discuss health concerns, breaking down stigmas around men's health and promoting preventative care, with knowledge spreading beyond direct participants to their wider communities where prostate cancer detection often occurs at later stages.

Consultation with stakeholders

Macmillan Cancer Support is a key stakeholder in our organisation, providing both funding and strategic guidance for our community health initiatives. We maintain regular communication with their community projects team through quarterly review meetings where we present our progress, discuss challenges, and receive feedback on our approach to cancer awareness in underserved communities. Hairforce 1 is another important stakeholder with whom we meet regularly to discuss ongoing and future projects. These meetings typically occur monthly and focus on improving the effectiveness of our pop-up barbershop model, refining our educational approach, and identifying new opportunities for community engagement. Their expertise in the barbering industry has been invaluable in helping us create comfortable environments where men feel at ease discussing sensitive health topics. In response to stakeholder feedback, we have implemented several improvements to our operations. Based on Macmillan's guidance, we enhanced our educational materials to include more culturally specific content and expanded our referral network to better serve diverse communities. Following suggestions from Hairforce 1, we modified our pop-up setup to create more private conversation spaces and adjusted our scheduling to maximise community reach. Additional stakeholders include the local communities we serve, the healthcare providers we partner with for referrals, and the barbers who volunteer their time and expertise. We collect feedback from these groups through surveys and informal discussions, which has led to adjustments in our locations, operating hours, and the specific health information we emphasise.
