Our work making theatrical productions benefits the community through its collaborations and outreach work with artists and community groups. During this year, the team began the development of a long term theatre and workshop programme, ‘Tap Root’, which at this stage focused on offering training and development opportunities to artists to develop meaningful work about the criminal justice and reform system in the UK. The development of ‘Tap Root’ this year focused on a series of development workshops with artists, and a public sharing to gain peer and wider community feedback. Working with a group of artists to develop a piece of performance, and workshopping this for audience feedback. This also secured professional mentor opportunities for the artists and feedback from the audience demonstrated an increased awareness and interest in the experiences of young offenders in the UK. We evaluated this early stage development of the ‘Tap Root’ theatre programme to devise the new development for current and future participants. This early stage development has led to the support of the Key Theatre in Peterborough, securing future funding to uplift the professional training and skill development opportunities for young creatives to engage with work about vulnerable adults in the criminal justice system.
