Stargazy FC CIC was founded in January 2023 and has since gone from strength to strength. The club’s aim is to provide a safe and inclusive environment, regardless of ability or experience, for people to enjoy football and the benefits of being part of a team. Since the first training session, over 50 new players have attended, and our weekly training sessions regularly attract over 20 individuals. People have the option to dip in and out of training without pressure. As Stargazy FC has grown and our players have developed on the pitch, a community has developed off the pitch too. The facilities at Hayle mean there is time for socialising and enjoying each other’s company after training. Stargazy FC has developed an active social scene away from the pitch, with players attending many events together during the evenings and at weekends. Our purpose continues to be to proudly serve the LGBTQ+ community throughout Cornwall by providing a safe and welcoming community space. In 2024, we won the Football v Homophobia Grass Roots Game Award, and we have been shortlisted for the Community Organisation Award for LGBT at the 2026 National Diversity Awards. We contribute to our community positively and inclusively to our community, upholding the Cornish motto: “Onen hag Oll” / “One and All”.
The company's stakeholders are our players. The Director of the company is the coach; she runs weekly training sessions and is therefore constantly engaged with and speaking to all players. This set up ensures there is a constant dialogue with the players, who know they can be open in giving feedback about training sessions, matches and social events. We were recently nominated for the Community Organisation Award for LGBT at the 2026 National Diversity Awards. We were given access to the reasons given for our nomination and the supporting statements written by our players when their votes were submitted. The vast majority of our players submitted supporting statements, stating that Stargazy FC is a vital part of their week as it provides a safe space where they can play football in a judgement-free environment and where they can truly be themselves. Many state that Stargazy FC is very important to their mental well-being and some have said they do not know what they would have done if the club did not exist.
