Dragonbird Theatre has provided the opportunity for people in the Bristol community to meet on a regular basis with their children (Early Years 0-5). The focus has been on creating theatre and song that is accessible for all parents/carers in the community regardless of culture, race or age. This has encouraged confident, creative and happy relationships between parents/carers and their children as well as building relationships and rebuilding connection within communities post COVID. DragonBird Theatre has been working hard over the past 11 years, to instill a love for theatre, song and play for Early Years age children and their families. We visit schools, nurseries and libaries all around Bristol and the surrounding area. Over lockdown we created professionally filmed films of some of our work for online viewing. Audiences have either supported us by having a monthly subscription to have access to our work or by individually buying a single show. We have also made this work available to schools and nurseries through our ‘DragonBird at School’ project. To make our work more accessible we have added Closed Captions and Audio descriptions to some of our online work . We have also developed a project which has seen our online films used as part of teaching English as a foreign language for children in Poland.
The company’s main stakeholders are residents of the Bristol Community. In particular Easton, Bishopston and any areas where we visit schools or nurseries. Other stakeholders include local Bristol schools, pre-schools, Children’s Centres, Childminder Hubs, Community Centres, Libraries and events where there is a need for provision of Early Years Theatre and song or a facility for Early Years and their carers. Some of the areas that we work in in Bristol are within the top most deprived areas in the country. The directors of the company have lived in Bristol for many years and have a sound knowledge of theatre provision for this developmental stage in Bristol. Since our development and implementation of our online work , our main stakeholders are mainly Bristol but now across the whole country and even abroad. We ask all schools, pre-schools and events for formal feedback via email and periodically through event feedback forms. We also speak to participants after our sessions and receive a lot of testimonials via our Facebook page. This has helped us to build up a comprehensive understanding of who is benefiting and how, from the experience of attending a DragonBird Theatre event. Much of our work with schools and pre-schools is as a result of recommendations from parents/carers who have attended our sessions.
