Circus for Survivors CIC is a community interest company delivering free, creative and movement-based workshops to support community wellbeing, bodily autonomy and social connection. We use a creative and somatic framework, which has a broad public-health and community wellbeing remit. The organisation works with people who experience exclusion, stigma or barriers to accessing mainstream wellbeing provision, including people affected by poverty or housing insecurity, people living with chronic illness or disability, people facing menstrual health challenges, elders, and others whose needs are not well met by traditional services. Our aim to build workshops nationally in a effort to bridge the gap between physical health and emotional wellbeing. We use circus arts, movement, creativity and play to support physical confidence, emotional regulation, joy, self-expression and peer connection. Sessions are offered both in person and online to maximise accessibility and reach, enabling participants from different regions of the UK to take part regardless of location, income or mobility. All activities are delivered free of charge and are designed to be inclusive, consent-led and adaptable to different access needs. Participant feedback consistently highlights reduced isolation, improved confidence, increased sense of agency and renewed engagement with their bodies and communities. In addition to direct delivery, Circus for Survivors CIC undertakes exploratory and pilot activities with community and health partners to test how creative, somatic approaches can contribute to wider public health and wellbeing outcomes, including pilot projects around menstrual health. Learning from this work is used to refine and strengthen future programme delivery.
The company’s stakeholders include workshop participants, community partners, facilitators and referral organisations. Stakeholder consultation takes place on an ongoing basis through participant feedback forms, post-session reflections, informal discussions and dialogue with partner organisations. Feedback is actively used to inform programme development. As a result of consultation, the company has expanded the range of creative formats offered, increased flexibility in delivery methods, and strengthened its approach to access planning, safeguarding and facilitator training. Quotes from participants further illustrate the value of our work: “Sharing space with people who struggle with similar issues made me feel less alone.” - B “Honestly you’ve been a life line at a time I wouldn’t be able to access support and coaching otherwise through the NHS due to really long waiting times and very low income for the last year. These workshops are a reason I am still here.” – S “Sharings pace with people who struggle with similar issues made me feel less alone” - B “Its mind blowingly amazing that im able to access this high-quality support for free. Im so grateful for this project!” - B “I have healed so much this year. I am more myself than I've ever been able to be, and the space you create and the support you offer has been at the core of that.” - C “It gave me a sense there is something else worth it for me here to exist for” - B
