Bakehouse GY CIC operates a community cafe and 'third place' in Great Yarmouth, England. During the financial year to 31 August 2025 the CIC's activities have benefited the community in the following ways: - local residents have been able to eat nutritious, freshly-prepared food on a pay-what-you can basis, with no questions asked regarding their ability to pay. This is a direct response to extremely high levels of poverty in the town, and has meant that hundreds of people have eaten hot meals that they would otherwise not have had access to. - young people have gained volunteering experience, including kitchen and front of house work - young people from marginalised groups (especially LGBTQ+) have had access to the only safe space in the town - community groups including other CICs, charities, and unincorporated organisations have had access to meeting space in our venue at 1 Whitefriars Court, NR30, at heavily subsidised or zero cost - the majority of our menu is made with surplus food collected from supermarkets, meaning that food waste is reduced - local artists have had access to exhibition space and specialist support from curators to show their work at Bakehouse
Bakehouse GY CIC's stakeholders are the residents of Great Yarmouth. Consultation with those stakeholders is at the heart of everything we do, and is 'baked into' our daily activities through a process of continuous feedback. During this financial year we actively consulted particularly with younger residents, including those who are temporarily housed in the local YMCA and in other emergency or non-standard accommodation in the town, to understand their specific needs and how we might support in their transition to either working life or a more meaningful engagement in their town and environment. As a direct result of this, some of these stakeholders have become volunteers in the cafe in both kitchen and FOH roles. We have also consulted with neurodivergent patrons of the space, and came to understand that sensory issues around food are a major barrier to many people's access to healthy, nutritious, fresh diets. In response, we piloted a series of 'from scratch' cookery classes in which local neurodivergent residents learned practical cookery skills using low-cost, easily accessible ingredients. The feedback from these classes has been overwhelmingly positive, and has strongly guided the direction of the organisation since. Other key stakeholders include CICs and CIOs elsewhere in Great Yarmouth, who we have consulted with on both a formal and informal basis to understand their needs and how we can support them. Access to physical space is a major issue for cash-strapped organisations of this sort, and in response to this we have been able to provide heavily subsidised space to community groups for arts and craft, addiction recovery, and early years support. The space is used weekly by CICs and CIOs for these purposes.
The total paid to directors during the period was £843.99.
