COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

CGDSCOT CIC

Company Number: SC705852 (Scotland)

Year Ending: 31 August 2025

Company activities and impact

We continued to run study clubs for dentists throughout the year. All tuition was carried out by experienced dental surgeons who gave their time without receiving payment. Candidates were prepared for the entrance exams to the medical Royal Colleges. This continues to improve the knowledge and skills of general dental practitioners in Scotland. Subjects covered included early detection of oral and head and neck cancers, safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, medico legal implications of treating adults with dementia, treating patients with complex medical conditions and safe handling of X rays, among many other topics which are of benefit to the patient population of Scotland. As usual, our major undertaking was the Annual Scotland Study Day at Glasgow Science Centre held on Friday 5th December 2024. We had engaged a speaker, Dr Louis Mackenzie, 18 months in advance to speak on the placement of composite (white) fillings which are used universally in both NHS and Private dental care. Louis Mackenzie was a world recognised expert in the field and was held in very high esteem within the profession. Unfortunately he took his own life at the age of 55 just before Christmas in December 2023. Our Study Day started with a tribute to Louis from Professor John Gibson, former Dean of Aberdeen Dental School and Professor of Oral Medicine, who lost a son to suicide. Prof Gibson has now established a Charity which delivers suicide prevention and postvention advice. We managed to retain Catherine Rutland, a friend of Louis, who presented on the Ethics of Aesthetics, warning of the pitfalls of consumer driven healthcare, and the perils of professionals engaging in social media. The main speaker for the day was Andrew Chandrapal, who had been a student of Louis, and who delivered “top tips” on the placement of anterior fillings for the morning session, and a similar talk on placing posterior white fillings in the afternoon. These fillings are no longer in the sole domain of private dentistry, as the manufacture of amalgam (silver) fillings is now being phased out world-wide. Our final speaker of the day was Dr Wendy Thompson who spoke on the subject of “Antibiotic Sustainability”. This is a major and urgent topic in healthcare due to the growing microbial resistance to antibiotics, and the imminent threat that the world will have no effective antibiotics available within the next decade. She emphasised the point that healthcare providers must stop the use of antibiotics when they are unnecessary, or we face the prospect of being unable to treat life threatening infections. Again, our topics are of no interest to commercial providers of CPD, but are vitally important to the entire community. As mentioned, we support Professor John Gibson’s Canmore Trust, and we allow him to have a stand present in the exhibitor’s hall for no charge. John was approached by several individuals throughout the day who had been experiencing suicidal ideation, and arranged for follow up counselling for them. We had several other charity groups present in the hall, again without charge to them. These were: Dental charities: Bridge2Aid, Maldent, Smileawi and GOHISS (Glasgow Oral health Improvement Student Society) Mental Health Charity: The Canmore Trust The CIC also made several charity donations. The Charities: Bridge2Aid, The Ameca Trust, Smileawi and The Canmore Trust all received donations of £1500 each from the CIC. Other activities involved engagement with The Dental Vocational Training Scheme. This is the training delivered to newly graduated dentists during their first year in practice. NES (National Health Service Education Scotland) allows us to access this group to signpost them to quality professional development and offer mentorship at this crucial and difficult stage. We also have a close relationship with the undergraduate students of both Glasgow and Dundee University Dental Schools. We offer financial support and sponsorship of their various events which is part of their pastoral care.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders are the entire patient population of Scotland who benefit from a more informed and motivated workforce. Our Study Day is the largest dental CPD event in Scotland and encourages both quality CPD and a collegiate environment for the sharing of information, experiences, failures and successes amongst the delegates. This allows individual practitioners to benchmark themselves against others, encouraging a safer patient experience. We grant CPD certificates for attendance which can only be accessed after completing a feedback questionnaire on the day’s events. We are always gratified by the feedback that we receive, and attempt to resolve any issues that arise. We also ask for suggestions for the CPD content for future years. The stakeholders who attend our study day range from dentists of all experience, expertise and age, members of the dental team such as dental nurses, technicians, managers, hygiene therapists and members of the trade. We also have a growing numbers of dental regulators who attend, such as the General Dental Council, various indemnifiers, The British Dental Association, National Health Service Education Scotland, NHS national services Scotland, and various representatives from financial services, accountancy and law, as well as teaching representatives from Glasgow Dental School. We have frequent meetings with teachers at Glasgow University Dental School about the content of the day as it relates to students and the recognised teaching curriculum.
