PROJECT SOMALI CIC

Company Number: 14322536 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 August 2025

Company activities and impact

The organization operated at full capacity during the 2024–2025 year, helping over 300 women and their children. A focus group survey showed a 95% satisfaction rate with the support provided. ESOL: Three tiers of classes (Phonetics, Beginners, and Intermediate) ran at a maximum capacity of 20 participants per class. 31 women achieved the required English proficiency to transition to college. There is a waiting list of 32 prospective participants. Sewing: Classes were split into beginner and intermediate groups. 100% of participants learned to operate a sewing machine, and 85% reported feeling less isolated. Four women became self-employed and are selling traditional outfits from home. Employment Skills: The workshop supported 120 registered women with CV writing, job applications, and interview skills. Six women secured employment, and five women were assisted with self-employment registration through Companies House. Additional Projects: Volunteer-driven initiatives included weekly coffee mornings, well-being classes, a revamped library room, and a summer party where ESOL completion certificates were awarded. Challenges and Future Plans The primary challenge is the expanding waiting list for ESOL and job skills classes, caused by unsolicited referrals from the local job centre. The organization is contacting the DWP and local MP Jess Phillips to establish a collaborative agreement. Future plans include securing work placements with local businesses, purchasing a SMART board for ESOL classes, and establishing a foodbank.
