Company activities and impact

Principal activityThe Aylesham Heritage Centre has continued to collect, preserve and make publicly the history of Aylesham village and Snowdown Colliery, The coal mine whose miners Aylesham was built to house. The heritage centre has been open weekly on wednesdays so visitors can come and view photographs, records, films, and artifacts. The records have been regulary used by family history researchers, who have been tracing their family links to both Aylesham, Snowdown Colliery and the wider coalfield, With people visiting from as far as wales, yorkshire and the north east. During the year the heritage centre maintains the memorial garden and memorial, which is dedicated to the miners who lost there lives at Snowdown Colliery, the momorial is situated in the grounds of the heritage centre/parish council building. It has taken part in a number of local heritage events. The Elvington and Eythorne Heritage day and Kent miners festival on august bank holidays at the kent mining museum which finally opened in April (2022) The Heritage centre also acts as a place where the community meets, fostering a sense of cohesion and well being, This is more important to the more elderly residents of Aylesham and the surrounding area who otherwise lead isolated lives. This is particulary true of the volunteers of the heritage centre, who otherwise would have little to occupy their time, but with the centre can be sure of company and a sense of worth in there later years.
