We delivered community-based wellbeing and environmental activities designed to improve mental health, reduce social isolation and increase access to nature for local residents. We delivered regular wellbeing sessions at Bill Quay Community Garden, providing beneficiaries with access to a safe and welcoming outdoor space where they could connect with others, learn new skills and improve their wellbeing. Activities included sowing seeds, planting, maintaining growing areas, harvesting produce and learning about sustainable gardening practices. In partnership with local charities and the Gateshead and South Tyneside Mental Health Team, we supported individuals facing mental health challenges and complex needs with structured outdoor activities promoting social interaction, confidence, and physical activity. We participated in community events, including a community day at Tinas Haven in East Durham on 25th July 2025, where we ran willow weaving activities. Additionally, we delivered educational workshops on soil health and sustainable growing practices. Garden produce was shared locally to improve access to fresh food and encourage home-growing. Alongside practical gardening activities, the project promoted environmental awareness, biodiversity and community involvement. Participants were encouraged to connect with nature, learn about wildlife and develop skills that could be used within their own homes and communities. The activities delivered during the year created positive social impact by improving wellbeing, strengthening community connections and increasing access to inclusive outdoor spaces.
Directors met frequently to discuss policies, finances, governance, and long-term sustainability, guiding strategic decisions. A steering group linked to Bill Quay Community Garden, including Sow Grow and Cook CIC, Edbert’s House, and Gateshead and South Tyneside Mental Health Team, collaborated to develop the garden’s vision, plan projects, and define roles. Stakeholder input emphasised accessible outdoor wellbeing activities, enhanced community engagement, and safe, inclusive spaces for mental health, social isolation, and disabilities.
