Seemia Theatre CIC was established so their activities provide benefit to: Marginalised communities, in particular, (but not limited to); - Migrant, Iranian & West Asian & North African diaspora, Latinx diaspora, and other Global Majority communities - Young people - Artists who are underrepresented in the sector and/or in the early stages of their career In our business year 2024-2025, Seemia Theatre conducted a mix of live performances, artist development and community outreach. ARTIST DEVELOPMENT We were invited to curate ‘An Evening With Seemia’ at Gate Theatre (Nov 2024), showcasing new scratch performances, works-in-progresses and rehearsed readings, celebrating WANA and Latinx talent. We supported 4 artists developing new work, with seed funding, opportunity for audience feedback, and photo & video documentation which are vital for future development. We facilitated 1 Digital Voices Workshop for artists keen to explore, develop and gain a better understanding of dramaturgy within digital theatre. COMMUNITY OUTREACH We facilitated 4 Creative Voices workshops with artsdepot for Iranian & WANA diaspora community. We facilitated 2 Creative Voices workshops with ARC Stockton. PERFORMANCES AN EVENING WITH SEEMIA was a sold-out evening SARIA CALLAS We conducted 1 one week Research & Development of a new Multimedia Theatre Production ‘Saria Callas’ at Oxford Playhouse before premiering the production in Spring 2025. Commissioned by Camden People’s Theatre and originally co-presented with A Play, A Pie and A Pint. Developed with support from Arts Council England. A total of 1 work-in-progress sharing, 17 performances across the two venues, including 2 integrated BSL (and Iranian Sign Language) Interpreted performances and 6 Closed Captioned performances. We committed to presenting ‘Saria Callas’ at Underbelly at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with activity taking place in our following financial year (2025-26). LETS LOVE It was agreed between both parties that the creation process and performances of ‘LET’S LOVE’ should be postponed until Spring-Summer 2026. ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT We were selected to pitch ‘Saria Callas’ to HOUSE Touring Network who support touring across South and South East England. Income was generated from a mix of public fundraising, commission fees, grants to support integrated access and box office income. As the three company directors are also employed freelance by Seemia Theatre CIC, they meet at least a minimum of once per month, increased to a minimum of once a week during project basis. The company directors regularly updated their business plan to reflect the fast paced nature of the creative industries and the opportunities that are available. There has been two online consultation meetings with our ensemble and associate artists to gauge: - their capacity for taking part in projects - what they want / or need to feel supported for developing new theatre - what they want to see the organisation commit further efforts to There was general agreement to continue searching for funding and residency opportunities to develop new work. There was a good understanding of the state of the industry and that opportunities were becoming more limited. We discussed the possibility of doing less, and that as a CIC, we can have a greater more meaningful impact whilst also not growing to a position which is unsustainable. We have continued to build our network with artists we are keen to work with in immediate or near future.
