Communi Link CIC runs a weekly online group which focuses on BSL signing to music and songs. The sessions are led by a deaf musician and communication professionals who specialise in British Sign Language translation and interpretation. This weekly group provides benefit to its members by; enhancing BSL communication and access, raising awareness of deaf communication through sign language, improving knowledge of BSL language and deaf culture, and provides a regular activity that improves mental wellbeing and reduces isolation. The sessions are inclusive and accessible for deaf and hearing members and led by people with lived experience of deafness and those who are professionally trained in BSL. Communi Link became an approved Signature centre to provide accredited courses. Signature is the leading awarding body and provider of British Sign Language (BSL) and other Deaf and Deafblind qualifications in the UK. Being an approved Signature centre provides benefit to the community by ensuring our training is nationally recognised and leads to accredited qualifications that improves communication skills and awareness to the wider community. Communi Link offered its first Introduction to British Sign Language course taught by a qualified deaf tutor whose native language is BSL. This provides an immersive and authentic learning environment and gives participants the opportunity to learn BSL language from native users and from those with lived experience as a deaf person. Communi Link has provided BSL communication support services in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) lessons for deaf refugees. The group of deaf refugees are from various countries and are learning English as an additional language and learning British Sign Language which will benefit their communication with BSL Interpreters in the UK. As each country has its own sign language, deaf refugees would benefit from learning BSL to engage with essential services in the UK when using BSL interpreters, such as for medical appointments and social services. Communi Link provides a weekly group for participants to develop their skills in British Sign Language. This includes deaf and hearing members and family members of deaf children. The group members are of mixed level abilities and experience in BSL and provide a friendly and welcoming space that brings deaf and hearing communities together. This helps to strengthen relationships and develop skills and confidence in BSL communication increasing personal and professional opportunities and reduces communication barriers. The sessions are facilitated by deaf BSL users and qualified communication professionals. Communi Link has started to develop visual resources to support BSL training, such as printable handouts with illustrations to help learners remember the BSL fingerspelling alphabet.
Communi Link’s stakeholders include participants who attend the company’s activities, families of deaf children, learners, trainers, communication professionals, and partner organisations. The company directors all have lived experience and professional experience relating to a range of communication barriers. Feedback is gathered through regular discussions with participants during our group sessions, feedback from learners, communication with tutors and partner organisations involved in our services, and regular directors' meetings. This ongoing engagement allows the company to understand the needs of our community and identify ways to improve the company’s services and activities. This feedback has informed the development and improvement of Communi Link’s activities, including the introduction of accredited courses, the development of learning resources, and the expansion of activities that bring together a wider range of participants to develop their communication skills. This has also helped shape the delivery of inclusive sessions that support wellbeing, reduce isolation and improve access to communication for people who experience communication barriers or difficulties. Methods of gathering feedback have included written feedback and suggestions from community members. This includes suggestions of more accessible activities, events, training, resources and equipment to help improve communication access. Communi Link also gathered feedback from our online sessions and collected data on how these sessions were received compared to in-person sessions which helped improve our online and in-person activities and highlighted the need for both online and in-person services.
There has been no remuneration paid to any of the directors. Communi Link CIC made payments during the year totalling £3,950 to Famlingo Ltd, a private company wholly owned by Juliana Varga, for services supplied for tutoring. The services were charged at an arms length market rate.
