| Basis of preparing the financial statements |
| Revenue |
| Revenue represents monies received from sponsoring organisations, subscriptions, donations and sales, excluding value added tax, of publications and materials. |

| Intangible assets are initially measured at cost. After initial recognition, intangible assets are measured at cost less any accumulated amortisation and any accumulated impairment losses. |

| Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Income Statement, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity. |

| Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date. |
| Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits |
| The company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to this scheme are charged to the profit and loss account in the period to which they relate. These contributions are invested separately from the company's assets. |
| Going concern |
| The directors have considered the financial position of the company and believe it is well placed to manage its business risks successfully. The directors have a reasonable expectation that the company has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future, thus continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the financial statements. |

| The income of the company is derived from its principal activities of events and membership services. As a result much of its income is derived from its members, some of whom are also directors. Transactions with directors are on the same terms as all other members. |
