COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

SUFFOLK ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES CIC

Company Number: 15913901 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 August 2025

Company activities and impact

During the financial year, Suffolk Environmental Services CIC delivered activities focused on reducing energy costs, improving energy resilience and supporting the transition to low-carbon communities across Suffolk and surrounding areas. The company's primary activity was the delivery of a free home energy efficiency advice programme. This included attendance at community events, face-to-face consultations, home visits and personalised energy assessments. Particular emphasis was placed on supporting households experiencing fuel poverty and those considered vulnerable. Residents received practical advice to help reduce energy consumption, lower household costs and improve understanding of energy efficiency measures. The company recruited, trained and supported a network of volunteer Energy Champions, including safeguarding and DBS processes where appropriate, increasing local capacity for ongoing community-based energy advice and support. The company also worked with local anchor institutions including community-owned pubs, sports clubs and community organisations. Activities included energy audits, desktop feasibility studies for renewable energy installations, funding assessments and development of programmes designed to extend access to energy advice through trusted community venues and networks. Suffolk Environmental Services CIC engaged with farming stakeholders and rural membership organisations to explore opportunities for improving rural energy resilience and supporting local renewable energy generation. Whilst a related funding application was unsuccessful, the work established new partnerships and increased understanding of opportunities and challenges facing rural communities. The company also completed desktop feasibility studies for a proposed community energy project and successfully secured grant funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to support future programme development. Collectively, these activities have benefited the community by helping residents reduce energy costs, improving access to trusted energy advice, supporting vulnerable households, strengthening local volunteer capacity and laying foundations for future community-led energy initiatives.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company's stakeholders include local residents and households, volunteers, Energy Champions, Parish Councils, District and County Councils, community organisations, sports clubs, community-owned venues, farming organisations, local businesses and wider community partners. Stakeholder consultation has been embedded throughout programme delivery and project development activities. The company has undertaken consultation through attendance at community events, structured feedback collection, surveys, Net Promoter Score (NPS) assessments, Parish meetings, presentations and question-and-answer sessions, one-to-one discussions with residents and stakeholders, and through ongoing communication channels including WhatsApp groups and community networks. Consultation activity has helped identify barriers to participation, common household concerns regarding energy costs and efficiency, and opportunities to improve accessibility and reach. Feedback gathered during home visits, consultations and community events informed programme development and helped shape future activities and communication approaches. Engagement with local organisations and anchor institutions also identified opportunities for extending support through trusted community settings such as sports clubs, community venues and local organisations, helping improve participation amongst harder-to-reach groups and potentially vulnerable residents. Consultation with farming stakeholders and rural organisations informed development of proposals relating to community energy and rural resilience initiatives, helping identify local needs and opportunities for future programme development. The company will continue to use stakeholder engagement and consultation to ensure its activities remain responsive to community needs and deliver measurable social and environmental benefit.
