During the financial year, the company organised 11 community markets. Each market brought together around 15 local makers, food producers and other small traders, providing them with an affordable and regular opportunity to sell directly to the public. This was particularly valuable for local makers, who often find it difficult to reach an audience or access suitable outlets for their work. The markets also supported access to locally produced food, including baked goods and produce from a local farmer. These products would not otherwise be easily available to the public in this location, and the market helped residents to buy from small local producers. Alongside the trading activity, each market included approximately two hours of free children's entertainment, usually in the form of craft-based activities themed around the time of year. This made the markets more accessible to families and provided a free, creative activity for children. The markets also created a regular community meeting place. They provided a welcoming and sociable environment where local residents could meet, talk and spend time together. There are few other opportunities in the area that offer this type of informal community encounter, and the markets therefore contributed to local social connection and community cohesion. On one occasion, the company provided a free stall for a Dr Bike service run by a local charity. This enabled residents to have bicycles checked for safety and receive small adjustments and repairs at the market. In addition, a Repair Cafe was run alongside each market. Residents were able to bring items for instant repair, including small electrical items such as toasters, clothing repairs such as zip replacements, and items of sentimental value, such as broken plates or ornaments. During the period covered by this report, the Repair Cafe attempted 238 repairs. This benefited the community by helping residents to save money, retain valued possessions, learn about repair, and reduce waste by keeping items in use for longer.
