Through the provision of pop up events throughout the year, community workshops and a 10 day festival in September the Hastings Book Festival aims to promote and provide affordable opportunities for the appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of books and writing. Using accessible venues, with an affordable ticketing policy, free / subsidised events and bursaries where appropriate, we aim to deliver a festival to benefit the whole community. We aim to deliver a varied and innovative programme of activities to help local writers to develop their craft and showcase their work. We also encourage the enjoyment of the written word amongst local schools and community organisations, with a strong focus on the development of creative writing skills. We also provide events for the wider community, organising specially curated events and providing a voice for those in communities which have traditionally been harder to reach. Our September festival provides a platform for nationally recognised writers to talk about their books as well as giving performance opportunities to local poets and authors of all ages.
Our stake holders are mainly our audiences and those participating in our workshops. After each workshop and pop-up event we ask each person attending to fill out a feedback form. Following our ten-day festival, a feedback form is emailed to all attendees. These are all carefully scrutinised, a report is compiled and any issues arising are dealt with. Following a comment from an earlier festival, we commissioned an EDI report which now informs much of our work and led to a series of focussed pop up events. We have also begun sending a regular newsletter with our email on, asking for comments so we can continue to shape and develop the festival in a way our audiences want.
