  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, net of discounts and value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the sale of goods and from the rendering of services.

    Tangible fixed assets depreciation policy

All fixed assets are initially recorded at cost. Property, plant and equipment is used in the company's principal activity for the production and supply of goods or for administrative purposes and is stated in the balance sheet under the historic cost model. This model requires the assets to be stated at cost less amounts in respect of depreciation and less any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost of an asset, less its estimated residual value (which is the expected amount that would currently be obtained from disposal of an asset, after deducting the estimated costs of disposal, if the asset were already of the age and in the condition expected at the end of its useful life), over the useful economic life of the respective asset as follows: Vehicles 5 years Office equipment 5 years

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

DISCOVERING42 CIC

Company Number: 12901297 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 September 2025

Company activities and impact

A major focus of the year was increasing access to educational and cultural experiences for communities that may face barriers to visiting traditional museums and learning centres. Discovering42 successfully delivered its Mobile Exhibition programme, taking interactive science and sustainability exhibits directly into communities throughout Cornwall. The exhibition visited village halls, community venues, schools, and events, enabling people of all ages to engage with hands-on learning opportunities within their own local areas. The organisation also designed and launched a mobile chemistry trailer, creating a unique travelling science engagement resource. This enabled Discovering42 to deliver practical science activities and demonstrations in locations across Cornwall, reaching new audiences and bringing engaging science experiences to communities that may otherwise have limited access to such opportunities. During the summer, Discovering42 further expanded its community engagement by installing a large marquee in Priory Park. This significantly increased capacity, allowing more visitors to access the Mobile Exhibition and participate in activities. The additional space also enabled the expansion of the popular Chemistry Mocktail Bar experience, where visitors explored scientific concepts through engaging, hands-on chemistry activities in a fun and accessible environment. Alongside these outreach activities, Discovering42 continued to provide workshops, educational events, and community engagement programmes that encouraged creativity, problem-solving, environmental awareness, and practical skills development. Participants were given opportunities to explore science, engineering, sustainability, and making through interactive and accessible activities. A significant milestone during the year was the securing a lease of a new, larger venue for Discovering42 in October 2025. The building had previously been unused and required substantial refurbishment and redevelopment. Work commenced immediately to transform the property into a vibrant community resource that will provide increased capacity for exhibitions, workshops, educational programmes, community activities, and future makerspace facilities. This development represents a major investment in the long-term sustainability and community impact of the organisation. The company's activities during the year benefited the community by increasing access to informal education, particularly in rural and underserved areas, providing engaging learning opportunities for people of all ages, supporting skills development, encouraging environmental awareness, and fostering curiosity and confidence. Through its outreach programmes, mobile learning initiatives, and investment in new community infrastructure, Discovering42 continued to contribute positively to education, community wellbeing, social inclusion, and lifelong learning throughout Cornwall.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company's stakeholders include visitors, workshop participants, children and young people, parents and carers, schools, community groups, volunteers, artists, local organisations, funders, advisory board members, and the wider communities served by the Mobile Exhibition and outreach programmes. Stakeholder consultation took place throughout the year through a combination of visitor feedback, workshop evaluations, informal discussions, meetings with schools and community organisations, advisory board meetings, volunteer feedback, and engagement with participants during outreach events and activities. Feedback from schools, who were struggling to cover the rising costs of hiring a coach, highlighted the importance of making science and sustainability activities accessible to people who may be unable to visit the main museum venue. In response, Discovering42 expanded its Mobile Exhibition programme, visiting additional village halls, schools, and community venues across Cornwall. Feedback also demonstrated strong demand for hands-on science activities, leading to the development and deployment of the mobile chemistry trailer and the expansion of the Chemistry Mocktail Bar experience. Consultation with schools, families, and community partners reinforced the need for larger and more flexible learning spaces to accommodate growing demand for workshops and community activities. This feedback contributed to the decision to secure a larger premises and begin its redevelopment into a dedicated community resource with increased capacity for exhibitions, workshops, learning programmes, and future makerspace facilities. Feedback has continued to inform the company's activities, ensuring they remain relevant, inclusive, and responsive to community needs.
