Belisamas’ Retreat CIC is a woodland and riverside retreat for Veteran’s mental health Many Veterans struggle adjusting to civilian life. At Belisama’s we share respite, comradeship, purpose and re-engagement with nature. Our objectives are to: Offer respite to Veterans through re-engagement with wild spaces; Deliver evidence-based, positive change in the mental well-being of Veterans; Through partnership, achieve self-sufficiency and add value to the community. Research has shown that 92% of people who visit Belisama’s Retreat feel that their visit(s) produce a significant improvement in their mental well-being. 84% of the people we asked felt that being outdoors reduced their 66% felt it helped with their anxiety; 27% said it helped reduce panic attacks; 55% used outdoor spaces to control anger; 74% felt it helped them overcome depression. The Retreat has engaged with the Veteran community across Lancashire and further afield and has established itself as the leading regional outdoor eco-therapy centre for Lancashire Veterans. The year 2024 to 2025 has seen regular use of the space that Belisama’s offers. Fundraising activity has been conducted with the aim of financing the purchase of an adjacent plot of land, meadow and woodland, which will pave the way for improved accessibility for disabled users, off-road parking and the development of horticulture. The development of this new land is being supported by United Utilities and other businesses as part of their corporate social responsibility.

We also have two ongoing surveys, the first, in conjunction with the Armed Forces Covenant fund “Positive pathways” programme measures the economic, health and well-being of Veterans. The second internal survey measures the impact of Belisama’s Retreat on the physical and mental well-being of our clients. Our service offering has been effectively modified to fit the needs of different user groups.
