The CIC has been dormant in the last financial year, but we have offered to act as a safe bank account for any of the small local projects under our umbrella if they wish to apply for grants. As MCNAG, we have interacted with the local IFCA to move forward a project involving local fishermen, divers, snorkellers and recreational surveyors to locate, tag and remove 'ghost gear' from inshore Norfolk waters. All parties are now in agreement and we are waiting for Natural England and the MMO input to the final wording. We have also encouraged local BSAC dive clubs to collaborate with litter picking communities to clear specific beaches and collect records of litter found instead of just picking sites at random and working against each other.
We have consulted with local beach cleaning groups via email and FB messenger about how best to integrate the new BSAC 'champions' project, which encourages dive clubs to undertake useful environmental work. This is a good thing, but needs to be channelled in useful and efficient directions. One club has been dissuaded from 'mapping' intertidal seagrass, which would have involved 20+ people walking across seagrass beds and damaging them. In-person consultation has resulted in them checking instead for invasive alien species on marina pontoons.
