I ran weekly philosophy coaching at three schools without charge over the academic year. The schools were a grammar school, Reading School, a comprehensive, Hayesfield Girls’s School and Mixed Sixth Form, and a specialist free school, Kings College London Mathematics School. These coaching sessions were led by the founding director Geraldine Ng. The sessions were aimed at preparing teams of pupils to represent their schools in The Ethics Cup. The Ethics Cup is a national competition organised by the Philosophy Department at The University of St. Andrews. Reading School won the National Championships 2026. The school pupils benefit from the coaching in several ways. They engage with real, practical ethical issues of public concern. They gain confidence in articulating their thoughts and ideas, develop their critical thinking skills, and practice listening to and trying to understand the views of others. They learn to come to a position about an ethical matter, to develop an argument for their position, and also identify and respond to worries about their position. They gain team building skills and organizational skills preparing for the interschool competitions. They practice philosophising.
