Visits Unlimited is a nationally respected social enterprise with over 12 years’ experience delivering access audits, training, and consultancy to improve access and inclusion for all. We are the creators of Accessible Calderdale a multi-award-winning initiative led by disabled people, rooted in lived experience, and focused on creating inclusive communities. We have promoted this work nationally through the English Inclusive Tourism Action Group and were finalists in the prestigious National Diversity Awards 2025 in September 2025, recognising our commitment to equity and innovation. Our work is practical, strategic, and embedded across Calderdale including our most disadvantaged areas. We combine national expertise with deep local knowledge and trusted relationships. Our success was also celebrated locally when we were nominated for the Community Foundation for Calderdale Breakthrough Charity of the Year, and our young volunteer Poppy was nominated for the Young Volunteer of the Year Award. We were delighted when we won both awards at the ceremony in November 2024. This year has been a period of significant growth and achievement for Visits Unlimited thanks to our dedicated staff and Directors. Visits Unlimited has thrived through a combination of local commissioned audits, national consultancy, and the delivery of Disability Equality training courses. These efforts have been supported by a diverse range of funders and partners, enabling us to expand our reach and deepen our impact across Calderdale, regionally and nationally. Projects We secured vital funding from organisations which have supported a wide range of initiatives, including, Direct Payment User Support. Online and face-to-face guidance sessions for Direct Payment users. Major Projects Co-production, Collaborative meetings with the Major Projects Team to inform early-stage planning. CultureDale Workshops, Facilitation of workshops and training to promote access and inclusion during the Year of Culture. Community Disability Awareness, Delivery of disability awareness sessions, access audits, and workshops in North Halifax. Volunteer Development, Enhancing our volunteer offer and working towards the Volunteer Quality Mark. Inclusive Dance and Wellbeing: Partnership project with Curious Motion offering inclusive dance and reflective wellbeing opportunities. Meet and Eat Sessions: Bringing local disabled people together in Calderdale’s most deprived areas. Focus Groups and Outdoor Activities, Expanding the reach of our focus groups and developing accessible outdoor activities. Transport Consultation: Partnering with Healthy Minds to consult on West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s local transport plan. Access Audits and Training: Providing unrestricted income through fees for access audits and disability awareness training outside Calderdale. Achievements and Impact Our success was also celebrated locally when we were nominated for the Community Foundation for Calderdale Breakthrough Charity of the Year, and our young volunteer Poppy was nominated for the Young Volunteer of the Year Award.
Our Accessible Calderdale Disability Access Forum (ACDAF) meets monthly and agrees our priorities. Our members include disabled people with a wide range of impairments and family members/carers. This user led group gives us rich insight into local knowledge and expertise and have a broad range of lived experience. They know what needs to change and what the solutions are to make our area more accessible and inclusive. We have regular subgroups on relevant topics that are prioritised by our ACDAF steering group. We work in co-production with local services and businesses, tourism sector, and the local authority and believe that there are many benefits in engaging with disabled people at the beginning of projects to avoid mistakes further down the line. We are becoming the go-to group in Calderdale and showing the benefit of working in co-production and how this really imbeds the voice of disabled people in all new plans for redevelopment programmes and new builds. Lived experience is key in planning. The Calderdale Major Project Team holds quarterly meetings giving local disabled people a say in the design of new projects and receive updates on current regeneration programmes. West Yorkshire Combined Authority has worked with us to organise focus groups to feed disabled people’s views into the West Yorkshire Transport Plan. Our Inclusive Voices project is a place for us to imbed genuine co-production into our own work and to work towards this with our stakeholders. Cup of Culture has been an opportunity to work alongside our stakeholders who are part of the Year of Culture and to promote inclusion and accessibility with those working in the field of arts and culture. We have evaluation forms for each of our training courses, our workshops and all our meet ups. We take the feedback seriously and use it to recommend further work. Our part time staff are crucial to the success of the project. Our engagement worker raises awareness of the project to increase the memberships, supports individual members to make sure that their access needs are met and they feel valued, confident to engage on the issues that are important to them. The engagement worker spends time to make reasonable adjustments so that everyone can be involved equally.
