Walkley Events Collective CIC exists to bring the Walkley community in Sheffield together through accessible, locally-run events, and to support and showcase local makers, artists, performers and volunteers. In its first period the company delivered a programme of community events, including: A Christmas Market and a “Christmas on the Green” event (December 2024); “Art in the Aisles”, a community arts event (April 2025); A community cinema programme, including screenings of Mamma Mia (June 2025) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (October 2025); A Makers Market supporting local stallholders and small businesses (July 2025). These events provided affordable entertainment and cultural activity for residents of Walkley and the surrounding area, created paid and volunteer opportunities for local people, and gave local makers, traders and performers a platform to reach the community. We estimate to have reached a minimum of 2,500 attendees at events across the year. As well as paid events, we have also run free community events such as the volunteer launch event in Walkley Library, open gardens and yard sales, as well as green space trail. We have built a strong community of 50+ volunteers who support our events, as well as hosting two students for volunteer placements from the University of Sheffield - helping them gain experience working with different demographics to aid their development. We have had over 100 vendors including local artists, performers, makers and food vendors over the 3 events. All of our events take place in Walkley, supporting other community groups and providing much needed income for local venues. Our website has a directory section which promotes local businesses and community groups, as well as providing a platform for events promotions. We are also sponsored for some events by local businesses, showcases our strong ties across the community.
The company's stakeholders include Walkley residents and event attendees, local makers, traders and performers, volunteers, and local partner and funding organisations (including Walkley Community Forum, the University of Sheffield, and Netherthorpe & Upperthorpe Community Alliance). Stakeholders are engaged through participation in events, direct feedback at and after events, and ongoing contact with partner organisations and funders. In order to ensure that we are delivering the maximum value to local residents we held a free session at Walkley Library where we facilitated a community co-designed activity. This shaped our event schedule for the coming year in 2025. Additionally, we had over 80 responses to an online survey directed at Walkley residents, where we asked for input on our events and gathered feedback from a wide range of demographics. Lastly, we provide opportunities for upcoming artists and makers based locally, by reserving stalls for those who are selling their products for the first time. We have consistently received feedback from these traders, on how well the events are run and how welcome they feel.
