Ken Hawley Collection Trust
Chair’s Foreword
for the year ended 31 October 2025
This has been a year of steady consolidation and important strategic progress for the Ken Hawley Collection Trust. As a wholly volunteer-led organisation, our continued development reflects the remarkable commitment, knowledge and professionalism of those who give their time to support the Collection.
Two major achievements define the period. Shortly after the year end the Trust was informed both of the success of its National Lottery Heritage Fund project Pride, Passion and Skills - Made in Sheffield and the successful renewal of Arts Council England Museum Accreditation. Together these represent strong external endorsement of the quality of the Trust's governance, collections management and public engagement.
Preparation for Accreditation formed a significant part of the Trust's work during the year, driving improvements in governance documentation, policy development, risk management and forward planning. The successful outcome reflects the sustained efforts of volunteers over several years to ensure the Collection continues to meet national museum standards.
Our digital audience continues to grow significantly, demonstrating the continuing national and international relevance of Sheffield's toolmaking heritage. At the same time, we remain firmly focused on our core purpose: preserving, documenting and sharing one of the world's most important collections relating to tools and manufacturing history.
We were also saddened during the year by the death of volunteer Doug Hindmarch, whose contribution to the organisation of our archives and support for research was of lasting importance. He is greatly missed.
On behalf of the trustees, I thank all our volunteers, partners and supporters whose continued commitment makes the Trust's work possible.
The trustees remain confident that the Trust is well positioned to continue protecting this important heritage while building a resilient and sustainable future.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Review of Activities and Achievements
Overview
The year has been one of steady progress across governance, collections management, digital engagement and strategic development. This has been achieved while continuing to support Kelham Island Museum and serve a growing national and international research audience.
Key themes included strengthening organisational resilience, improving digital access, preparing for Accreditation and positioning the Trust for future development.
Collection Development and Stewardship
The Trust continued its programme of documentation, care and development of the Collection, supported by policy development required for Accreditation.
A revised Forward Plan covering the period 2024-2029 was approved, establishing priorities around governance, sustainability, documentation, digital access, partnerships and public engagement.
Important additions included a Moore & Wright precision tool display, a cabinet maker's tool chest with strong Sheffield social history connections and further specialist instruments.
The national significance of the Collection was further demonstrated through the loan of an object to the Imperial War Museum.
Museum Accreditation
Achieving renewed Museum Accreditation remained a major organisational priority during the year. Preparation work included governance review, policy updates, forward planning and continued strengthening of collections documentation procedures.
In December 2025, the Trust was formally notified that Accreditation had been successfully renewed. This confirms the Trust continues to meet nationally recognised standards for governance, collections care and public engagement.
The assessment process also identified development areas including succession planning, digital strategy development, continued documentation improvements and implementation of security recommendations. These align closely with the Trust's existing strategic priorities and forward planning work.
Digital Development
Improving digital access and resilience remains a strategic priority.
Work continued toward development of a new website to better integrate the Trust's digital resources, including the Name on the Knife Blade database and video resources.
The Trust also continued improving ICT resilience through review of storage arrangements, backup procedures and future equipment replacement planning. Improvements to database efficiency also released additional system capacity.
Digital Engagement
Ken Hawley Collection Trust (Registered number: 02925721)
Report of the Trustees
for the year ended 31 October 2025
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Digital engagement continued to grow strongly, demonstrating the global reach of the Collection.
The Trust's YouTube channel achieved over 220,000 views during the year and grew to more than 12,000 subscribers. New content included recorded lectures, historic industrial films and interpretation of collection themes.
Approval of YouTube monetisation also created a modest but growing unrestricted income stream.
The Name on the Knife Blade database continued to attract significant international use, with over 116,000 active users, more than 244,000 page views and over 850,000 engagement events recorded during the year.
These resources continue to generate research enquiries and demonstrate the long-term value of previous digitisation investment.
Research and Knowledge Sharing
The Trust continued to support research enquiries from academics, collectors, museums and the public. This included providing specialist advice, supplying images and supporting published research relating to Sheffield's manufacturing heritage.
Volunteer-led research publications also continued, reinforcing the Trust's reputation as a centre of specialist knowledge.
Exhibitions and Public Engagement
Two temporary displays were developed within the Hawley Gallery highlighting engineering heritage and unusual objects from the Collection.
The Trust also supported the Kelham Island Museum lecture programme and expanded access through online publication of recorded talks.
Improvements to visitor engagement included enhancements to interpretation and children's learning activities delivered by volunteers.
Volunteers
Volunteers remain central to the Trust's success, contributing across collections care, research, visitor engagement, governance and digital development.
The trustees formally record their gratitude for the exceptional commitment shown by volunteers throughout the year.
In Memoriam - Doug Hindmarch
The Trust records with sadness the death of volunteer Doug Hindmarch. Doug made a lasting contribution through his professional librarian expertise, particularly in developing the organisation of archive materials and supporting research access.
The trustees record their sincere appreciation of his contribution.

The project will support digitisation of the Collection, development of a digital hub, recording of traditional manufacturing skills, strengthening of partnerships with manufacturers and expansion of learning resources.
Following the year end the Trust received confirmation of the project's success. This represents a major strategic opportunity to strengthen resilience, improve access and expand engagement.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Financial Review
The Trust remains financially stable, with sufficient unrestricted and restricted funds to meet normal operating costs.
Income continues to be derived from donations, talks, visits, research support, monetisation of YouTube channel and online giving.
The trustees continue to adopt a prudent approach to expenditure while recognising the need for investment in digital infrastructure. The successful Heritage Fund project will support this priority.
Reserves policy
The trustees aim to maintain unrestricted reserves sufficient to cover approximately two years of normal operating costs.
