Training continues to impact local families. I have trained students at local Universities (Liverpool John Moores Uni) who will go on to be our future educators, enabling our Makaton users to have more people to communicate effectively with and safeguarding more of our most vulnerable members of the community. I have trained a large volume of hospital staff from Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital enabling Makaton users to have put say on the care they received and relieving anxiety at hospital appointments. I have also delivered a free Taster at AlderHey Children’s Hospital for professionals supporting those with Learning Differences. This allowed more professionals an insight into What Makaton is, how it helps and also taught them around 50 signs to help them to communicate more effectively with those in their care. Heightening awareness is essential for our Makaton users and their families, allowing them to communicate using their preferred means with more people from their local community and further.
Feedback forms are sent to every participant who attends training with me. The feedback goes directly to The Makaton Charity so they can oversee the quality of my training and I can also ensure my work is impactful. From feedback it has been identified some participants would be better supported through the use of digital manuals which have now been created. I am also a part of the Working Party of Tutors supporting this process. I also sit on a Learning Disabilities Forum and it was raised that a Makaton signed video of an MRI would benefit those with communication challenges and reduced the need for general anesthetic. I have supported the Congenital Heart Defect Network with this on a voluntary basis. This will not only benefit those with Learning Challenges and Communication Needs but a wealth of people who may just be apprehensive about what to expect during an MRI
