Company activities and impact

The company coordinates the Redruth Orchard Project which includes volunteer sessions, events and activities and involvement of local residents in the creation and care of 3 x community orchards. Examples include weekly volunteer sessions at Trenoweth Community Orchard in a public park attracting volunteers to help tend to the trees and shrubs, harvest and connect with other each other. The project has brought neighbours who wouldn't otherwise engage with one another, on something positive and uplifting in an increasingly stressful world. We learn, we teach, we share skills, we build and empower and we aim to have fun & relax. We provided 6 x Orchard workshops for Cornwall residents who volunteer at a community orchard, own a private orchard or work at orchards at 6 different orchards across the county. We helped coordinate the planting of and community engagement of 5 new community orchards both East and West Cornwall. We worked with 2 x primary schools as part of this project and students from a further education college. Our community grafting project worked with a local primary school and a community group to teach apple tree propagation plus We have provided advice and support to around 10 communities this year who are seeking to plant community orchards, including empowering local people, gaining grant funding, sourcing trees and support equipment, orchard management and training. This has all been on a voluntary basis. We provided affordable apple pressing equipment hire (fees going directly to equipment maintenance and replacement) to 12 groups or individuals in Autumn 2025 with support and guidance all coordinated voluntarily. As well as providing equipment and apples to a local school and community group. We continue to raise awareness of older traditional orchards that are still under threat and what action people can take to support and conserve them. We have provided info stalls with orchard advice and guidance at a number of events and conferences across the year. We have continued to support the development of the Cornwall Orchard Network and the annual Gathering bringing together around 40 people each year to share knowledge and updates. Also organising visits to orchards and orchard related talks.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our recent AGM invited all volunteers and other interested parties to become Members of ROC and to help guide what we do. The event also involved verbal feedback from different projects from those involved, volunteers or freelancers and also written anonymous feedback forms. As a result of these developments we are now developing a team orchardist members to develop and improve our pruning services. We are also looking at how to develop our community work in Redruth as it is clear from responses that this is very much valued and wanted.
