Principal activities of the company

The company is a Community Interest Company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales. Its principal activity during the period was the facilitation of peer support for families affected by pregnancy loss, baby loss and infertility.

Additional information

The company’s income was primarily derived from fundraising activities. The principal expenditures comprised operating costs in support of the company’s community-interest purpose. The directors consider that the company has continued to operate in accordance with its community interest objectives and that appropriate records have been maintained. This report has been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies.

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

    These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

    Turnover primarily represents amounts received from fundraising activities and is recognised when the related funds are received. Turnover is reported net of fundraising platform fees.

    Other accounting policies

    Expenses Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis when there is a present obligation arising from a past event, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required, and the amount can be estimated reliably. Costs of materials and other items directly incurred in relation to fundraising are reported within fundraising expenses. Other expenditure is reported within operating and administrative expenses and relates to the costs of running the CIC and delivering its activities. Debtors and prepayments Trade and other debtors are recognised at the amount receivable, less any provision for bad debts. Prepayments are amounts paid in advance and recognised as assets until the related expense is incurred. Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents includes amounts held in the company’s bank account. Taxation Taxation for the period comprises current tax and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Income Statement except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity. Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted. Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the statement of financial position date. Reserves The surplus for the period is transferred to reserves and retained within the company to support its community interest objectives.

Company activities and impact

Branch is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company founded in November 2024 after the founder Jess Waugh experienced the loss of her son, Louis. The organisation exists to ensure that no one has to face pregnancy loss, baby loss or infertility alone. In the period from 5 November 2024 to 30 November 2025, Branch completed its first year of operation following incorporation and substantially developed its peer support offering, while also carrying out fundraising, awareness-raising and outreach work with universities, hospitals and medical professionals. Branch is led by four directors and supported by ten trained, DBS-checked volunteers, all of whom have lived experience of loss. Our core offer is free, inclusive peer support delivered through more than 50 moderated WhatsApp groups, alongside fortnightly online support sessions and local in-person meet-ups and community events. These spaces enable people to connect with others who understand what they are going through, reducing isolation and helping to improve mental wellbeing, confidence, relationships and hope. We are especially committed to reaching people who often struggle to find appropriate support, including bereaved fathers and partners, people from ethnic minority communities and LGBTQIA+ bereaved families. Feedback from our community demonstrates the value of this work. A survey conducted in December 2025 found that 97% of respondents felt less isolated after joining Branch, 87% said Branch bridged a gap in wellbeing support, and 95% found Branch as helpful as, or more helpful than, other support available to them. Over the year, our WhatsApp community grew steadily, with more than 1,000 people joining Branch during the period and over 600 active users. We also expanded the structure of the community by increasing the number and range of groups, including those for people trying to conceive and people pregnant after loss, so members can find relevant peer support at each stage of their journey. In response to community feedback, we continue to develop additional groups where needed. During the year we also strengthened our policies and procedures to ensure the WhatsApp community remains safe and supportive. Alongside the growth of the peer support network, we raised approximately £16,000 through fundraising and donations, including a “Move to Remember” sponsored run during Baby Loss Awareness Week in October 2025 and the UK Branch Relay, which connected members across the country from Scotland to Cornwall through the passing of a physical branch. We are very grateful for the generosity, commitment and energy shown by our community in supporting these initiatives. We also strengthened our partnerships and outreach work, including collaboration with hospitals, NHS clinics, Sands and Tommy’s, and engagement in co-training sessions for hundreds of midwives. In addition, we have been working with university research into the impact of pregnancy loss, baby loss and infertility, and the role of peer support in improving mental health and wellbeing outcomes. These partnerships help us extend our reach and contribute to wider change in how pregnancy loss, baby loss and infertility are understood and supported.

Consultation with stakeholders

Branch’s principal stakeholders are our members – who are people who have experienced or are experiencing pregnancy loss, baby loss and infertility. We are a community-led organisation with volunteers and the directors all being part of the community. The community is continuously involved in how Branch is run and in shaping its strategy and offering, including through WhatsApp groups, a feedback / complaints form and surveys. This has been reflected in the addition of new WhatsApp groups in response to feedback and the introduction of more regular online meetings (now fortnightly), and ongoing work to host more events for our community and expand our outreach and partnerships.
