PART 1 - GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY’S ACTIVITIES AND IMPACT In the space provided below, please insert a general account of the company’s activities in the financial year to which the report relates, including a description of how they have benefited the community. The company is the UK chapter of Dark Sky International, which is an environmental and conservation organisation that seeks to help preserve dark skies by highlighting issues of light pollution and its impact on human health, wildlife and habitats. We have a website with a member’s area and invited members of the public, and lighting professionals to join. Individual and professional memberships increased this year by 25 and 4 respectively, with 2 new corporate members being created. We worked with lighting professionals, assisting some lighting companies to achieve “dark sky” certification from Dark Sky International for their lighting products on a global database. We created an online collaborative slack space which now has 185 members and co-ordinated political lobbying with members presenting evidence in both the house of Lords and Commons in relation to environmental and planning legislation. We are supporting dark sky applications in Gateshead, Ouseburn, Dedham Vale and Scotland. The Dedham Vale application was successful. We attended and were consulted at several parliamentary meetings this year, several light pollution and astronomy events and several professional meetings. This support includes regular communications, the printing and delivery of leaflets etc. We respond to 1 or 2 queries about light pollution from our website each week. We are working with a coalition of like-minded groups, including the CPRE, RAS, Secured by Design, Butterfly Conservation and Bat Conservation, to create a more joined up approach to light pollution and its impacts. We are working with the Science and Technology Funding Council to restart their “Dark Sky Discovery Programme”. This has included a regular monthly meeting plus several email communications, and the process is still ongoing. This year we delivered a Pilot for this, in 2 schools in Gateshead and Northumberland to create 7 new urban dark sky discovery locations. We are working with Jeep to utilise our co-created “jeep Stargazer” concept car programme and integrate it with our dark sky discovery programme. In September we co-hosted a “pollution to solution” conference with the University of Newcastle. In October we attended and collaborated on workshops at the Artificial Light at Night Conference in Ireland.

The company’s stakeholders are lighting professionals, academics and scientists who all have an active interest in reducing or eliminating light pollution. We have quarterly online meetings to discuss the latest action points and parliamentary lobbying plans, in addition to seeing what dark sky applications we can support by means of offering our time free, or financial assistance for equipment etc.
