Blue Bubble Immersive CIC was established on 29.10.2024. It was established to provide benefit to individuals and communities facing health and wellbeing challenges, particularly paediatric patients and their families. Blue Bubble Immersive CIC aims to use innovative immersive technology to bring the ocean to children in hospital. Our mission is to enhance wellbeing in hospital settings, make the ocean more accessible to children and inspire future ocean custodians. During Blue Bubble Immersive CIC’s first year we focused on development and preparation for delivery. Operational progress included: Applying for grants and funding: We secured seed funding and ran a successful crowdfunding campaign, supported by National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory, who pledged to match fund the campaign. Building a volunteer team: Paediatric doctors and nurses, wildlife filmmakers, immersive technology experts and marketing advisors. Collaboratively we have refined the pilot programme and the overall business model. Preparing for delivery: We designed and developed our first seven minute immersive ocean film and piloted this with children in a school setting. We have strengthened our governance and safeguarding framework, and continue to develop medical documentation, consent forms, hospital agreements, insurance and legal advice to ensure compliance and protection for all involved. Developing outreach: We have also grown awareness through social media, website development and participated in a social venture weekend with Cambridge Business School. These efforts have resulted in 9 hospitals and hospices, mainly in South West England, agreeing to pilot Blue Bubble Immersive CIC. This includes several paediatric departments: general children's wards, paediatric emergency department, child assessment unit, play teams and a specialist children's hospital. We are now completing the legal frameworks necessary to begin these pilots, which we aim to deliver during 2026.
Blue Bubble Immersive CIC has engaged with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure our work meets the needs of the children and healthcare professionals. In our first year stakeholders have included school children and parents with legal responsibility, teachers, paediatric consultants and senior nurses, underwater wildlife filmmakers, immersive technology experts and providers of mentorship programmes. Consultation with stakeholders has taken place through school classroom sessions, meetings, email discussions, mentorship programmes and workshops. Our school pilot was in a school, a few miles from the Devon coast. One of the children had never seen the sea before. Using our headset with the underwater virtual reality film, was their first ocean experience. The school children shared that they found the 7 minute immersive film relaxing, calming and engaging. To improve it their only feedback was for it to be longer. The school has kindly invited the Blue Bubble Immersive CIC team back for more school classes to try our underwater immersive experience. Direct feedback from healthcare and the school children has allowed us to tailor the immersive content for children in hospital and the staff that care for them.
