Learning Keys CIC is a supplementary school held at Pollards Hill Library that runs two different sessions of two hours each weekly for up to 20 Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils, with a tutor-to-child ratio of 1:4. This year we ran a 26-week programme across the Spring and Summer terms of 2026 involving tuition classes and creative workshops. Our organisation supports children in Merton who face educational disadvantages in Maths and English due to economic disparities, language barriers, learning disabilities and other challenges. The project was aimed at raising academic achievement, nurturing enthusiasm and confidence, fostering emotional and social development, and strengthening family and community cohesion through improved educational outcomes. The older KS2 children were also involved in helping with handing out useful items to people in the community who benefited from the PHBC Community Food Bank. ## Impact and feedback from parents We gave questionnaires to parents at our parent workshop to discuss children’s needs and funding needs, and received useful feedback and inspirational case studies which we submitted to our funders. There was significant improvement in phonics, reading comprehension and Maths activities at all levels. This was evident in the high scores pupils made in their phonics test, Year 1; times tables test, Year 2; and SATs Maths and English test, Year 6. There was increased interest, enjoyment and confidence in reading and building new vocabulary, especially as this year was declared the National Year of Reading. Children were engaged in writing and art competitions. Pupils were eager to complete their CGP workbooks and were consistent with their attendance. One parent’s comment: Learning Keys has helped my son build confidence in his English, Maths and Reading. The tailored feedback for parents goes far beyond what you would typically receive at a parents’ evening, highlighting exactly where he needs to improve while also reinforcing what he’s already learning at school. Beyond academics, Learning Keys has helped my son develop a habit of learning outside school hours. Learning Keys keeps things more engaging through creative workshops, such as the Global Recycling Day Art Workshop that left a lasting impression. My son still tends to the plant pots he made that day, including daily watering.
