| 3. | ACCOUNTING POLICIES |
BASIS OF PREPARING THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
SIGNIFICANT JUDGEMENTS AND ESTIMATES
No significant judgements have had to be made by the directors in preparing these financial statements.
REVENUE
Revenue is recognised to the extent that it is probable that the economic benefits will flow to the Company and the revenue can be reliably measured. Revenue is measured as the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, excluding discounts, rebates, value added tax and other sales taxes. The following criteria must also be met before revenue is recognised.
Sale of goods
Turnover from the sale of goods is recognised when all of the following conditions have been satisfied:
- The Company has transferred the significant risks and rewards of ownership to the buyer;
- The Company retains neither continuing managerial involvement to the degree usually associated with ownership nor effective control over the goods sold;
- The amount of turnover can be reliably measured
- It is probable that the Company will receive the consideration due under the transaction; and
- The costs incurred or to be incurred in respect of the transaction can be measured reliably
Turnover comprises revenue recognised by the company in respect of the manufacture and sale of UPVC windows and conservatories together with related consumable goods sold during the year, exclusive of value added tax and trade discounts.
Turnover is recognised upon delivery of the product.
TANGIBLE FIXED ASSETS
Tangible fixed assets under the cost model are stated at historical cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Historical cost includes expenditure that is directly attributable to bringing the asset to the location and condition necessary for it to be capable of operating in the manner intended by management.
Depreciation is charged so as to allocate the cost of assets less their residual value over their estimated useful lives, using the straight line method.
Depreciation is provided at the following rates:
Improvements to property - 10%
Fixtures and fittings - 15%
Computer equipment - 15%
Motor vehicles - 25%
The assets' residual values, useful lives and depreciation methods are reviewed and adjusted prospectively if appropriate, or if there is an indication of a significant change since the last reporting date.
Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing the proceeds with the carrying amount and are recognised in the Statement of income and retained earnings.

INVESTMENTS IN SUBSIDIARIES
Investments in subsidiary undertakings are recognised at cost.
STOCKS
Stocks and work in progress are stated at the lower of cost and net realisable value, being the estimated selling price less costs to complete and sell.
Cost is based on the cost of the purchase on a first in, first out basis. Work in progress and finished goods include labour and attributable overheads. Costs include all direct costs in bringing the work in progress to its present condition
At each reporting date, stocks and work in progress are assessed for impairment. If stocks are impaired, the carrying amount is reduced to its selling price less costs to complete and sell. Any impairment loss is recognised immediately in profit or loss.
TAXATION
Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Income Statement, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity.
Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted.
Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date.
DEFERRED TAX
Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date.
Timing differences arise from the inclusion of income and expenses in tax assessments in periods different from those in which they are recognised in financial statements. Deferred tax is measured using tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the year end and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference.
Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits.
OPERATING LEASES
Rentals under operating leases are charged to the profit and loss account on a straight line basis over the lease term.
PENSION COSTS AND OTHER POST-RETIREMENT BENEFITS
The company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the company's pension scheme are charged to profit or loss in the period to which they relate.
INVESTMENTS
Investments held as fixed assets are shown at cost.
FINANCE LEASES AND HIRE PURCHASE
Assets obtained under hire purchase contracts and finance leases are capitalised as tangible fixed assets. Assets acquired by finance leases are depreciated over the shorter of the lease term and their useful economic lives. Assets acquired by hire purchase are depreciated over their useful lives.
Finance leases are those where substantially all of the benefits and risks of ownership are assumed by the company. Obligations under such agreements are included in creditors net of the finance charge allocated to future periods. The finance element of the rental payment is charged to the profit and loss account so as to produce a constant periodic rate of charge on the net obligation outstanding in each period.
