The ‘Dream Team’, a diverse group of 15 independent older people from Enfield, met regularly throughout the year as both Jazanne Arts’ advisory group and a drama and reminiscence group. They wrote an original murder mystery, created their own characters and performed the show three times at the Southgate Club to sold-out audiences totalling 160 people, primarily older people alongside some younger family members aged over 12. The project was funded by the City Bridge Foundation, National Lottery Awards for All, Laing and private donations. “You can do things you didn’t think you could. You can go through life self-limiting, but Jazanne brought out of me something I didn’t know I had.” Participant Homelands Jazanne delivered ‘Homelands’, a new intergenerational project in Newham exploring migration, from autumn 2024 to spring 2025. We delivered four outreach sessions for more than 100 people and then established a regular group of 16 older participants. The group worked with 60 children from Earlham Primary School to create and share an interactive exhibition combining live performance, film, audio soundscapes and displays. A further 120 children and 20 adults experienced the live exhibition, and the resources were collated for online use by schools across the UK. Project partners included Forest Gate Community Garden, Cornerstone Cafe, Our Community Cares and Earlham Primary School. “Connecting with people who are of a different age was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.” Child participant We would like to thank Culture Within Newham and the City Bridge Foundation for funding this work. Additional activity and community benefit Jazanne Arts has also: Partnered with Immediate Theatre to bring older people’s drama groups together across North and East London, share their work and strengthen their voices, funded by the City Bridge Foundation. Presented our show at several Black History and Windrush celebration events. Presented at face-to-face and online conferences and symposiums. The activities benefited the community by improving resilience, quality of life, and mental and physical wellbeing for vulnerable older people, including Caribbean communities and people living with dementia. They also reduced isolation, strengthened connections between local older people and children, and promoted the work of Caribbean and mixed-cultural older artists and theatre makers.
