The CIC was incorporated in July 2012 and is the successor to informal organisations which provided the services it now manages, namely Deddington News, the parish magazine, and Deddington Online, the parish website. Deddington News published its first edition 50 years ago this September 2026, a remarkable achievement. It has published magazines, 10 months per year, continuously in that time, providing information on the organisations and services in the parish along with articles related to the clubs and societies, including the various cultural, sports and educational groups. The magazine also includes lists of events, reports on parish council meetings and original articles and reports from the community along with feature articles and short histories considered likely to be of interest to the readers. The magazine is delivered free of charge to every household in the parish, currently numbering approximately 1,200, and published in digital form through its sister organisation, the parish website Deddington Online. https://www.deddington.org.uk/ Deddington Online was established in 1997 to carry general information about the community, including the organisations which operate here, along with information and links to the parish church, the health centre, the charities, clubs, societies, sports facilities and many other facilities available in the community. Importantly, it provides a calendar of events and links to the current and past editions of the Deddington News alongside links to the extensive history of the parish and a gallery of over 3,000 photographs providing a visual record of the parish since the advent of photography. The CIC is self-financing. Deddington News is published as an A4-sized magazine (usually 36 pages) aiming to provide information, original articles, reports, announcements, letters to the editor and other material of interest, together covering approximately 50% of the space available, with the other 50% dedicated to advertising local organisations, businesses and events. Those advertisers pay a fee to advertise and this income generates the funding to pay for printing and publication of the magazine and the operation of the website. The board meets quarterly to review the CIC’s operations and financial position. Costs are kept strictly under review. The board has established an 18-month reserve to ensure the company has the funds to maintain financial stability. We aim for an approximate 10 to 15% profit margin to cover unexpected increases in costs. While the Articles of Association allow for the donations of surplus capital to worthy local causes, this is a secondary benefit to the community. The recent focus on building the financial reserve has prevented the company from making any donations in the last few years.
The company’s stakeholders are primarily (i) the members of the community who receive the magazine Deddington News, free of charge to their door, ten times a year (ii) the local organisations which advertise in its pages, (iii) those, near and far, who access Deddington Online for information, (iv) the many clubs, societies and organisations which maintain links through the website, and (v) the teams of volunteers who produce and deliver the magazine and edit and maintain the website. The editors of the magazine meet regularly with their editorial team, receiving feedback on the magazine’s reception by the community. We know from direct feedback from families who have moved into the community that they have found the magazine and the contents of the website extremely helpful in familiarising themselves with what the parish has to offer. Our advertisers tell us that the incremental customer base they gain often refer to the magazine as the reason an individual has contacted them. The stability of the advertising base reflects that benefit. The CIC has not undertaken any specific consultation this year. The feedback referred to above and feedback by emails or letters direct to the editors as well as phone calls relating to particular articles provides welcome direction to the CIC.
