Ancholme Valley Heritage Trust Ltd (Registered number: 08764973)
Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 30 November 2025
Our total recorded Brigg Heritage Centre (BHC) visitor numbers for 2024-25 were: 3,009 (whole year 2025). This is very similar to the previous year's recorded figures (note that figures only reflect those recorded by on-duty volunteers during our opening hours of 10:00am to 2:00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and does not represent other stream users to events at the Buttercross). We submit our visitor figures to North Lincolnshire Council's Tourism Survey annually (2025 data submitted 4/2/26). Ancholme Valley Heritage Trust Limited Trustee's thanks extend to all individuals who contribute to the running of Brigg Heritage Centre.
During the employment of the current BHC Manager, operational changes and evolution of processes to the organisation have proven to 'turn around' AVHT for Brigg Heritage Centre by decreasing the end of year / annual deficit. Necessary changes across many facets of the charity have brought about positive and impactful enhancement. While reinforcing a consistent quality experience, to support the permanent collection. Which, during this period, has seen progressive updates to BHC: Gallery 2 (via the input of North Lincolnshire Council Museum Services curators) in anticipation of the arrival of the restored Angel sculpture installation including collated Angel Hotel related artefacts. The Angel Building is the home of Brigg Heritage Centre, and BHC is the home to the Brigg Raft (the permanent collection's principal artefact).
Across this financial year period AVHT have witnessed increased positive response from visitors at BHC, this is also reflected in uplift in donations and community collaborations as part of our 'community engagement initiative'. As a charity, we ensure Brigg Heritage Centre is a 'safe space' and 'visitor destination' for all, by creating interesting temporary displays, interacting with the general public, participating in chosen community events, and proactively tackling daily operational improvements.
Operational elements are administered transparently by our Manager and the AVHT Trustees are kept in the loop (with the aid of access to secured administrative files). BHC Manager's reports are produced in preparation for upcoming Trustee Meetings which provide an operational snapshot from the 'operational perspective' - where upon Trustee decisions can be made in the knowledge of having access to up-to-date information. In February 2026, the Manager's contract is scheduled to be extended by one year - to align with available operational funds. Provision has been made to review employee remuneration levels, as economically appropriate.
We anticipated a positive financial year for 2024-25, commencing the new financial period with a continued stable financial start. The Trustees have put strategic measures in place to attain return on interest rate on funds - utilising savings accounts, while being mindful of 'funds access' as necessary. We anticipate during subsequent financial periods that amendments will be necessary to best manage the funds held within savings accounts and ensure that the reserves policy is periodically reviewed. Plus, a keener eye is to be kept on ongoing financial budgets and forecasts, bolstered with the change of accountancy services provision to TurnerWarran Accountants and the return of finance specialist David Barker as AVHT Trustee.
Funding, by way of grants, for this financial period have primarily come via Brigg Town Council for the design and installation of the V.E.80 commemorative WW2 walk through exhibition on the BHC Footbridge (all curated 'in-house' utilising the design skill set of our Manager). The long-awaited larger project relating to Pingley Camp 81, as planned by the appointed (part-trustee) project team 'Tier 1', unfortunately the team have been unable to forge ahead with the installation - due to various logistical factors. The project team 'Tier 1' continues to develop at planning stage to secure viability of a permanent installation through possible grant funding avenues. More support from NLC Museum services would be welcomed, as well as wider AVHT Trustee decisions - which will be made outside of this current reported financial year period.
Continued collaborative working continues with the North Lincolnshire Council Angel Building Partnership and North Lincolnshire Council Maintenance Services to maintain the BHC environment and broader areas of the Angel Complex, while preserving, as best we can, a healthy and sustainable financial position.
At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 9th July 2025 Kay Rothery was elected as Chair and David Barker as Vice Chair. The previous Chair, Trevor Richardson sadly passed away in March 2025. A commemorative plaque was organised by the AVHT Trustees to be unveiled in BHC's Period Room. Trevor served as Chair from 2016-2024 - he is fondly remembered for his quiet guidance and dedication.
Ancholme Valley Heritage Trust Ltd (Registered number: 08764973)
Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 30 November 2025
Ancholme Valley Heritage Trust Ltd (trading as Brigg Heritage Centre) are at the heart of our local community and are proud to be 'Brigg's No.1 Heritage Destination' - showcasing our permanent collection (the principal artefact being The Brigg Raft circa. 800BC), while delivering exciting events, temporary exhibitions, creative workshops, and activities to the public.
Events:
Craft activity is integral to Brigg Heritage Centre and our programmes during this financial period include:
- Farmers' Market Crafts - activities for children - to meet the needs of the children of the community.
- 'The Create Escape' Workshops for adults - focussing on mindfulness, tranquillity and well-being.
- The Arts & 'Raft' Movement - annual Summer arty sessions for August.
- Children's Christmas programme: Santa Visit and X-Crafty Christmas.
- Visits to the Centre by local groups and organisations.
- Collaboration with North Lincolnshire Council, community groups and businesses and charities.
All of which are potential income streams supported by raffles and 'Kitty: Shop Charity' areas within BHC. Plans for the 2026 schedule will increase the programmes of Farmers' Market Crafts and The Create Escape Workshops and 'rest' the arty sessions for August and the X-Crafty sessions - to focus provision for better opportunity fundraising.
Talks: During this financial year, BHC secured two historical talks by Dave Gibson: Bomber Command and their involvement with D-DAY (June 2025), Airfields of North Lincolnshire (October 2025).
Trails and in-gallery activity: During this financial year, we produced seasonal trails. This type of 'fee-paying' entry has proved somewhat low in generating trail-associated fundraising. Therefore, future endeavours will be reviewed and strategically choose the best seasonal times. Tombola and raffles prove to be most popular, and this method of fundraising is adopted seasonally and at selected events (as appropriate).
The AVHT Trustees and Management endeavour to expand upon and developing current activities and of seeking new opportunities to further raise Brigg Heritage Centre's profile and status within the community and further afield. By doing so, encouraging footfall to Brigg Heritage Centre - to keep the local heritage relevant and in the psyche of returning and potential visitors. In October 2025, The Mini Pumpkin [Craft] Kit was launched and a marketing drive to promote BHC and the October half-term 'Rebel Pebble' (rock decorating) and 'Pinecone Bats' (construction) in-gallery activity station was a success. This event was free to attend as a drop-in and was used to test the wider popularity of crafting for all ages and was in addition to the traditional trail led activity - which the 2025 Halloween theme was Hide 'n' Shriek (the worst witches: Meryl Creep and Wook Hole).
Education
School Visits: Education days at BHC were popular in the early part of this financial year. However, this proved unviable at the package fee per child (as previously set). In June 2025, a much-needed review was carried out with the cooperation and agreement with NLC Museum Services / BHC-Education-lead (as part of AVHT's regular Museum Liaison Meetings). The BHC 'School Visits' website page was relaunched for academic year 2025-26 and subsequent school visits are bringing better returns financially. Further work will be required by AVHT Trustee and Edu-leads to hone a more formal education 'helper' team to expand on coping better with Edu-rollout. It is imperative to be able to focus on where income can be best derived While also ensuring that our educational resources are updated accordingly and suitably stored for ease of school visit planning and set up.
Exhibitions
To expand upon the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions are curated, installed and publicised 'in-house' by Brigg Heritage Centre personnel, and those featured during this financial year include:
Ancholme Valley Heritage Trust Ltd (Registered number: 08764973)
Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 30 November 2025
Holocaust Memorial / A Brighter Future (mid-Jan to mid-Feb 2025): Working in partnership with Brigg Town Council: Reinstallation of immersive walk through on BHC's footbridge. Exploring the horrors of genocide and the Holocaust. This exhibition is to be used annually to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 27/1.
(SLHA) Society for Lincolnshire History & Archaeology (mid-March to end May 2025: BHC hosted the SLHA 50 Glorious Years, which ran alongside and in conjunction to BHC's own 'Curious Cases: Unlocking the curiously random'. A community engagement collaboration - exploring quirky artefacts and objects with interesting stories behind them. This display explored the use of QR codes to expand the information digitally to add interest in the display.
V.E. Day 80th Anniversary (24 April to 14 June 2025): This immersive WW2 walkthrough on our gallery connecting footbridge provided a unique opportunity to commemorate Victory in Europe during WW2. This exhibition also featured break out spaces throughout the other BHC galleries to ensure best coverage and best use of the loan items which were provided by the local community. The principal feature was the story of John William Drayton (Jackie) - a poignant reminder of the experiences of war and a fallen hero. Thanks to the Bowers family for sharing their moving story. A 'Vintage Flavours' event was organised by BHC to add to the sense of occasion and celebration for V.E. Day. Visitors enjoyed wartime flavours and were able to reminisce about the war period and modern times alike.
Barton Camera Club (3 June to mid-July 2025): An annual event in the Brigg Heritage Centre calendar Barton Camera Club's 2025 Annual photography Summer Show display (independent installation). With invitation extended to host again in future - which has been secured for the 2026 schedule.
Remembering Brigg's War Heroes: In the lead up to V.J.80, BHC wished to honour those local heroes of war. John William Drayton's story continued, with extensive displays designed featuring Frederick Arthur Keal (WW1), Dennis Arthur Keal (WW2) and a smaller commemoration to John Thompson (WW2). Our thanks go out to all who contributed the special objects and stories - which we were able to share with our visitors. Special thanks extend to Jane Langstaff for her continued support of Brigg's local heritage.
The Ghosts of Christmas Past: As part of festivities, a previous BHC temporary exhibition was reimagined in the Churchill Room which was to be the focus of Christmas activity for 2025. To round off this financial year the traditional 'Visit Santa' event was planned for the end of November 2025.
Pingley: Planning continued during this financial period.
We continue to work with North Lincolnshire Museum Services (within service level agreement) for the curation and maintenance of the permanent collection.
Room Hire / Weddings
During this financial year:
Room Hire: During this financial period the Ancholme Room became a corporate training space and generated a better return on the use of space as a more business-focused space for training, small private sector business, community groups and charity clients were principal clients for this space. The Buttercross was a popular venue - revenue was derived from, Brigg's independent bookshop (for events), a weight loss franchise, a theatre group, a community choir, a league of vintage buying businesses, various charities, the NHS, private functions, and repeat business from the organisers of the annual 10K Poppy Run (registration event). Additional income derived from facilitating the Mayoral Election Polling Station in May 2025. Our own events supplemented income via the Buttercross with our Talks by Dave Gibson.
Weddings: The Package format of Wedding provision proved popular and during 2025 fourteen weddings took place at the Buttercross. Thank you to everyone who enabled facilitation of this - as a primary income stream for the charity.
Shop Sales and Card Transactions
The 'Little Shop @ BHC' is an ever-evolving resource and a fantastic opportunity to generate much needed income for Brigg Heritage Centre. As we do not carry huge stock levels of any one item, we can adapt to chase ever-changing market forces and tastes - as and when necessary. Small investment was made with the purchase of a Samsung Galaxy A9 tablet to continue Zettle (PayPal POS) transactions. The donated iPad, as previously used, was old generation (obsolete) and was no longer supported by the NLC I.T. systems.

Report of the Trustees

Risks, Issues and Challenges to the Charity
We continue to receive positive feedback from visitors which has reflected in increased donations, for which we are thankful to receive - however it is a constant challenge to raise income into the charity as we are free at the point of entry.
We constantly strive to improve to make best use of our space, our time, our resources. Thanks to our 'craft lead' and team for all they do to promote Brigg Heritage Centre as a fantastic place to visit, socialise, learn new skills - all reinforces the promotion of our local heritage to the community. However, we do not remain complacent on this area and are willing to evolve with changing community needs.
Previous concerns relating to the Buttercross (as noted in previous financial review) and working alongside a commercial business (food sector), proved to be a non-starter as the commercial entity withdrew. However, any improvements or changes made proved to be positive - given the success of the Buttercross as our principal income generating venue during this financial period.
Our financial position has improved throughout this financial year. As an organisation we continue to seek any potential grant funding, donations, sponsorship of events/exhibitions to build a momentum when it comes to securing ongoing funding. This is a collective team effort.
Issue/Risk: Local Authority communication in October 2025 detailed the possibility of a permanent Banking Hub (as an asset for the community) and the proposed site identified as the Buttercross building. The interested party, ultimately intend to take possession of the whole building, therefore AVHT lease on the Buttercross (upper level) is put at risk. The proposed plan will impact AVHT's future viability during subsequent financial periods (affecting planning and financial forecasting). Meetings with local authority will continue into FY 2025-26 as negotiations evolve. AVHT do not wish to break the current Buttercross lease (as this venue provides much needed fundraising opportunities based on our current operational model). AVHT is open to dialogue with local authority representatives to navigate suitable outcomes for all affected. In the interim, as a charity, we must explore alternative ways to secure alternative sources of income - as we encounter transitional change, to ease pending operational and financial pressures.
Reserves Policy: 2025 review, approved on 12 November 2025 by Trustees at AVHT Trustee meeting.
Planning, reassessing our position and prudent use of our funds and future targeted applications for funds/resources should ensure the sustainability of the charity.
The BHC Manager continued with operational measures as necessary throughout this financial year, implementing with transparent approach to administration roll-out. Enabling all AVHT Trustees to be kept abreast to ensure a smarter working practice for the future. Striving to maintain Brigg Heritage Centre as Brigg's No.1 Heritage Destination!
