Company activities and impact

Paddle Media developed and delivered journalism-based workshops for children aged 7-11, 12-15, and 16+. In total,16 workshops were delivered in schools snd colleges in Ramsgate and Broadstairs. Thanet district has lower literacy rates than the national average. These workshops engaged children with writing in a way that was fun and accessible. They also discussed the idea of writing as a vocation. Children learned how to research, interview sources, and construct a short news story. This encompassed critical thinking and also discussed how to identify fake news. Feedback from teachers and students was extremely positive, with a number of schools asking to book more workshops for a larger number of classes. Paddle Media also supported the development of local culture publication Strange Tourist, in line with its long term goal of launching a trading newsroom for early career journalists. In the short term, it has cemented Strange Tourist as an important outlet to support the local economy in Thanet.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s primary stakeholders are local schools and teachers. Throughout the process of delivering the workshops, we invited regular feedback. Workshops were adapted frequently based on this feedback, as well as observations made in classrooms while delivering them.
