Company activities and impact The core aim of justlife.art CIC is to provide art education of the highest quality primarily to the local community in West Cornwall, the rest of the County of Cornwall, and to occasional visitors who happen upon us. Inclusion and diversity being at the heart of everything we do, especially for those with lived experience of mental health disability, which often brings with it experiences of discrimination that have yet to be addressed in the main in today’s society. Creation of a warm, friendly down to earth grass roots environment in which to create. Venue In the long term it will become essential to secure a permanent venue/studio of our own so that we can store all of our equipment and materials, which are many, so that we dont have to transport it to the community halls hired at a daily rate that works out quite expensive and laboursome. Plus we desperately need the stability as after only 16 months operating out of Sancreed Village Hall (after already havig moved from St Just Parish Church Rooms) we again had to relocate as there were numerous ongoing problems with the electrics which were not workable, and we had to stop life drawing as could not keep the environment warm enough for life models etc. We are now located in Zennor Village Hall and we all absolutely love Zennor and everyone has been so enormously welcoming of us, especially as we are painting all of the parishioners portraits. However, it is not large enough, we cannot get paint on the floor, the light comes in from the south which is not what we need, and the storage space is severely limited. Still looking for a permanent venue of our own. We are now looking for somewhere permanent in Penzance as we are aware of so many people that rely on public transport that cannot access our courses and regular weekly sessions given our location. Most rural locations have good public transoport to Penzance and its central to so many places in West Cornwall. Courses/Workshops/Tutors Duncan Cameron continued teaching Anatomy for Life Drawing workshops every couple of months, and we started commissioning many high profile portrait painters from aroud the UK to come and teach with us, many of whom are members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters(RP) or Contemporary British Portrait Painters (CBPP), with Tom Mead CBPP, Tim Hall, RSMA and Amy Dury teaching short courses with us for the first time as well as Kate Broad beginning to teach more experimental life drawing workshops with us too including monoprint life drawing. Untutored Sessions – Portraits of Sancreed/life drawing. Unfortunately, we eventually had to stop life drawing whilst at Sancreed Village hall due to problems with the electrics, however, we restarted some life drawing when we moved to Zennor in May 2025. We continued painting the portraits of the local community in Sancreed Parish, aiding in keeping session costs as low as possible as not needing to pay for models to come and sit for us. When we first moved to Zennor we decided to get models in for the first term whilst we acclimatised and decided to start a more formal project of painting the entire community of Parishioners of Zennor Parish, people working in the Parish or regular attendees of the Church and those involved in the creation of the pantomime. There are over 200 residents of the Parish and it will take us five years to paint them all, and we have a yearly exhibition and villagers get to keep their favourite portrait. We didn’t start this but just organised it to start in the September of the next financial year. Volunteering Still mainly non-formalised volunteering by attendees who take it in turns to help set up and everyone attending helps clear up. The running of justlife.art CIC still continued to mainly be run voluntarily by Director Helen (Rose) Phillips, however it is still hoped that regular attendees will come forward and volunteer to take on more specific roles as we grow. The hope is that those with lived experience of mental health disability and/or other protected characteristics might benefit from being involved, gaining confidence in their abilities and value and acquiring new skills along the way and enjoy and shape the justlife.art community. Stakeholders/attendees One of the key intentions of justlife.art CIC is to privde the highest quality art courses, and possibly in time low rent art studios, whilst being inclusive around protected characteristics and the marginalised. Especially wanting to eradicate stigma, pathologisation, stereotyping and assumption around mental health disability that is still so prevalent in today’s society. Often provisions for those with mental health disability can be somewhat patronising and lack recognition of the skills and potential of those attending. There has been no formal surveying of percentages of attendees with disclosed mental health disability, physical disability, LGBTQIA+ and Black ,Asian and Ethnic Minority. In terms of disclosure there have been around 25% of those attending that have disclosed having lived experience of mental health disability. We would like this to increase over time, developing a safe place where people feel safe to disclose without fear of prejudice. Consultations with regular attendees helps shape the weekly sessions and courses, and tend to take place informally during weekly portrait and life drawing sessions and via email as well as some meetings over lunch. Also, we recognise that inclusion must include financial inclusion and as such we have been running the courses at cost price. We have an email list of over 300 whom we email a newsletter each month to advise of news and up coming courses and sessions and invite feedback, and are on Instagram where we post mainly photos of peoples work created during sessions and of fliers for courses. Impact for the community Providing a small community art school with focus on what those living locally need in terms of art practice development rather than visitors to Cornwall, although we do welcome a few visitors here and there onto courses. Providing highest quality art courses at cost price making as affordable as we can currently, however would like to be able to offer some subsidised places at some point. Providing a safe space for those feeling marginalsed, isolated, living with mental health disability where they are valued, seen, heard and celebrated, and where people gain skills and confidence in their art practice. Involving the entire community (Portaits of Sancreed/Zennor) to attend and sit for their portrait, encouraging community involvement and creativity. Some have begun being commissioned to paint portraits and have exhibitions selling their own work.

We meet regularly, most weeks, where regular attendees are consulted on potential new tutors, discuss ongoing weekly untutored sessions and if any new sessions are needed, discuss volunteering, ask for feedback on what can be improved. We also engage with the local community by attending venue meetings , inviting them to come and sit for their portrait and enquire what creative activity they might be interested in and form particular access level entry sessions designed specifically for them. We give questionnaires to course attendees on completion of their course to get invaluable feedback so that we can adapt and address any concerns and anything we can improve upon. We also send out a monthly newsletter where we ask for feedback and for ideas. Primarily we are directed and run by the community for the community with visitors to Cornwall attending too.
