We continue to support a PhD student based at the Marine Biological Society in partnership with Newcastle University. This student is the driving force behind our novel ‘green gravel’ kelp restoration work. As part of this work, kelp spores are seeded and cultured in a dedicated lab before being out planted to the wild. Our research has also extended to investigate the use of excessive seaweed biomass washed up on the shore ‘wrack’ and the potential uses as part of a circular economy and to reduce landfill waste. We also continued to research specific regional case studies to understand the anthropogenic stress factors impacting the survival of wild macroalgae populations.
The stakeholders are kept in regular contact through emails, meetings held at least bi-annually, and phone messages as required.
