During its first year of operation, Hope Haven CIC provided community support to individuals and families across Essex. The company began with a particular focus on supporting new settlers and families experiencing cultural and language barriers, social isolation and difficulties understanding and accessing local services. During the year, Hope Haven broadened its outreach in response to needs identified within the wider community. Its activities developed to include support for people experiencing poor mental wellbeing, social isolation and barriers to accessing appropriate support. Community outreach activities included practical support and signposting, telephone check-ins and opportunities for people to meet and build social connections. This helped individuals and families access information and support, develop local networks and feel less isolated within their communities. In Basildon, Hope Haven delivered a mental health awareness and empowerment project aimed at reducing fear, stigma and inequalities associated with mental health. The project included four group mental health and wellbeing sessions, a confidence-building workshop, peer-support discussions, self-advocacy activities and signposting to local mental health services and support. A total of 25 residents participated in the project. Participants reported greater willingness to ask for help, improved self-esteem and feeling less isolated and more supported. The activities also increased mental health awareness, strengthened peer-support networks, improved confidence and emotional resilience and helped reduce barriers to accessing appropriate support. The project was delivered in an inclusive and non-judgemental environment using accessible language and encouraging people with lived experience to support and inspire others. With the exception of a paid speaker, the project was supported by volunteers who also participated in the sessions and shared their experiences. Overall, Hope Haven CIC's activities during its first year contributed to improved wellbeing, increased confidence, reduced social isolation, stronger community connections and improved awareness of and access to support. The experience gained during the year has also helped the company identify wider community needs and develop its activities to support a broader range of beneficiaries across Essex.
Hope Haven CIC engaged directly with beneficiaries throughout the year through its community outreach, group activities and wellbeing sessions. The smaller group settings provided opportunities for participants to share their experiences, discuss the challenges they faced and provide informal feedback on the support provided. Feedback and observations from participants helped the company understand the needs of the communities it serves and identify areas in which its activities could be developed. In particular, feedback from the mental health project highlighted the importance of safe and trusted spaces, peer support and interactive sessions in enabling people to discuss mental health openly and seek support. The company also engaged with volunteers, community contacts and local networks to help identify community needs and promote access to its activities. This engagement has informed Hope Haven CIC's plans to broaden and develop its future community programmes.
