Notes to the Financial Statements

for the Period Ended 31 May 2026

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

Turnover comprises the fair value of the consideration received or receivable for the sale of goods and provision of services in the ordinary course of the company's activities. Turnover is shown net of sales/value added tax, returns, rebates and discounts and after eliminating sales within the company. The company recognises revenue when: The amount of revenue can be reliably measured; it is probable that future economic benefits will flow to the entity; and specific criteria have been met for each of the company's activities.

    Valuation information and policy

These financial statements have been prepared using the historical cost convention except that as disclosed in the accounting policies certain items are shown at fair value.

    Other accounting policies

Going concern The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis. Tax The tax expense for the period comprises current tax. Tax is recognised in profit or loss, except that a change attributable to an item of income or expense recognised as other comprehensive income is also recognised directly in other comprehensive income. The current income tax charge is calculated on the basis of tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the reporting date in the countries where the company operates and generates taxable income. Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash on hand and call deposits, and other short-term highly liquid investments that are readily convertible to a known amount of cash and are subject to an insignificant risk of change in value. Trade debtors Trade debtors are amounts due from customers for merchandise sold or services performed in the ordinary course of business. Trade debtors are recognised initially at the transaction price. They are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less provision for impairment. A provision for the impairment of trade debtors is established when there is objective evidence that the company will not be able to collect all amounts due according to the original terms of the receivables. Trade creditors Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of business from suppliers. Accounts payable are classified as current liabilities if the company does not have an unconditional right, at the end of the reporting period, to defer settlement of the creditor for at least twelve months after the reporting date. If there is an unconditional right to defer settlement for at least twelve months after the reporting date, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at the transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

OUR STORY & CO. COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Company Number: 16469625 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 May 2026

Company activities and impact

Our Story & Co. Community Interest Company exists to support families from pregnancy through the early years by reducing isolation, improving wellbeing and providing practical, emotional and developmental support. During our first financial year, we established a range of community and family support services across Reading and West Berkshire. Our activities included parent and baby groups providing welcoming spaces for new parents to meet others and access peer support; postnatal wellbeing sessions combining gentle exercise with opportunities for connection and support; early years play sessions promoting children's development through play; and Mumease, our personalised in-home family support service providing practical help to families when they need additional support. We also delivered family workshops, activities and community events designed to reduce isolation, strengthen relationships and provide opportunities for families to connect within their local community. During the year, we secured external funding which enabled some of our community activities to be provided free of charge or at a reduced cost, helping to remove financial barriers to participation. Through these activities, the company has helped parents and carers build local support networks, provided practical support to families experiencing periods of additional need, created opportunities for children to learn and develop through play, and helped reduce isolation among local families.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our main stakeholders are the families who access our services, along with local libraries, community venues and organisations that support the delivery of our activities. We regularly seek feedback from families through informal conversations during sessions, emails, social media interactions and occasional feedback forms following activities and events. Feedback from families has helped shape how our services have developed. This has included adapting activities and session content in response to families' needs, developing new workshops and activities following parent requests, and introducing outdoor sessions during school holidays to make it easier for families with older siblings to attend. We continue to use feedback, conversations with families and attendance at our activities to help us understand local needs and inform the future development of our services.

Directors' remuneration

The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £8,963.50. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for directors’ loss of office, which require to be disclosed.

No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
