During the financial year, the Nigerian Community Tees Valley (NICOT) organised activities aimed at bringing people together, reducing isolation and promoting community wellbeing. Family gatherings and outdoor activities provided opportunities for members to socialise, build friendships and strengthen their sense of belonging. NICOT also held town hall meetings where members could openly share their experiences and raise concerns. The organisation worked with the police to address issues including racism, discrimination and profiling. This engagement has developed into regular meetings, helping to improve communication, trust and understanding between the community and the police. NICOT also organised cultural events where members celebrated and showcased Nigerian culture and heritage, promoting inclusion and community cohesion. In addition, members benefited from mentorship, training, employment information and job opportunities. Overall, NICOT’s activities have strengthened community relationships, supported integration and personal development, reduced social isolation, and created opportunities for members to connect, share experiences and support one another.
NICOT’s key stakeholders include its directors, community members, patrons, advisers and volunteers who support the organisation financially, through mentoring and by contributing their skills and experience. Stakeholders are consulted regularly through meetings of the Central Executive Council, which includes executive members, ex-officio directors, patrons and advisers. These meetings provide opportunities to discuss community welfare, planned activities, spending and other matters affecting the organisation and its members. Feedback from these consultations has helped shape NICOT’s activities and processes. Recommendations included collecting relevant information from new and intending members, ensuring that personal information is managed appropriately in line with GDPR requirements, and building stronger relationships with other organisations across the Tees Valley. In response, NICOT has taken steps to improve its membership info.
