Revenue Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, excluding discounts, rebates, value added tax and other sales taxes. The company where applicable recognises revenue over the life of individual contacts on the following basis: The amount of revenue can be reliably measured; it is probable that future economic benefits will flow to the entity; and specific criteria have been met for each of the company's activities. d. Leases A lease is classified as a finance lease if it transfers substantially all the risks and rewards incidental to ownership to the lessee. If the lease does not transfer substantially all the risks and rewards incidental to ownership, it is classified as an operating lease. Lease classification is dependent on the substance of the transaction rather than the form of the contract. Classification is made at the inception of the lease and is not changed during the term of the lease unless both the lessee and lessor agree to change the provisions of the lease, at which point the classification is re-evaluated. Payments made under operating leases are charged to profit or loss on a straight-line basis over the period of the lease. e. Defined contribution pension obligation A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which fixed contributions are paid into a pension fund and the company has no legal or constructive obligation to pay further contributions even if the fund does not hold sufficient assets to pay all employees the benefits relating to employee service in the current and prior periods. Contributions to defined contribution plans are recognised as employee benefit expense when they are due. If contribution payments exceed the contribution due for service, the excess is recognised as a prepayment. f. Taxation The tax expense for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in profit or loss except that a charge attributable to an item recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity. In this case, the tax is recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity respectively. 6
Qcom Technology Limited 2. Accounting policies continued f. Taxation continued Deferred tax balances are recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed by the balance sheet date, except that:
Deferred tax balances are not recognised in respect of permanent differences except in respect of business combinations, when deferred tax is recognised on the differences between the fair values of assets acquired and the future tax deductions available for them and the differences between the fair values of liabilities acquired and the amount that will be assessed for tax. Deferred tax is determined using tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date. g. Goodwill Goodwill represents the difference between amounts paid on the cost of a business combination and the acquirer’s interest in the fair value of the group's share of its identifiable assets and liabilities of the acquiree at the date of acquisition. Goodwill is initially recognised as an asset, measured at its cost, being the excess of the cost of the business combination over the fair value of assets and liabilities acquired in the business combination. Subsequent to initial recognition, goodwill is measured at cost less accumulated amortisation and accumulated impairment losses. Goodwill is amortised on a straight-line basis over its useful economic life. h. Intangible assets Intangible assets are initially recognised at cost. Subsequently, they are measured using the cost model. Under the cost model, intangible assets are measured at cost less any accumulated amortisation and any accumulated impairment losses. All intangible assets are considered to have a finite useful life. If a reliable estimate of the useful life cannot be made, the life must not exceed 10 years. If factors such as a change in how an intangible asset is used, technological advancement, or changes in market prices indicate that the residual value or useful life of an asset has changed since the most recent balance sheet date, the Company reviews its previous estimates and, if current expectations differ, amends the residual value, amortisation method or useful life, accounting for this as a change in an accounting estimate. 7
Qcom Technology Limited 2. Accounting policies continued i. Amortisation Amortisation is provided on intangible assets so as to write off the cost, less any estimated residual value, over their useful life as follows: Asset class Amortisation method and rate Goodwill Straight line over 5 years j. Tangible fixed assets Tangible fixed assets are initially recognised at cost. Cost includes the purchase price and any costs directly attributable to bringing the asset to the location and condition necessary for it to be capable of operating in the manner intended by management. Subsequently, tangible fixed assets are measured using the cost model. Under the cost model, tangible assets are measured at cost less any accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. All tangible fixed assets are considered to have a finite useful life. Depreciation is calculated to allocate the depreciable amount of tangible fixed assets to their residual values over their estimated useful lives on the following bases: Asset class Depreciation method and rate Fixtures and Fittings Straight line over 5 years Office Equipment Straight line over 5 years Long Leasehold Property Straight line over 5 years Computer Equipment Straight line over 2 and 3 years Plant and Machinery Straight line over 3 years If factors such as a change in how an asset is used, technological advancement, or changes in market prices indicate that the residual value or useful life of an asset has changed since the most recent balance sheet date, the Company reviews its previous estimates and, if current expectations differ, amends the residual value, amortisation method or useful life, accounting for this as a change in an accounting estimate. In the Company’s individual financial statements, investment properties rented to other group companies are classified as tangible fixed assets and held at historical cost less depreciation and impairment. 8
Qcom Technology Limited 2. Accounting policies continued k. Stocks Stocks are stated at the lower of cost and net realisable value, being the estimated selling price less costs to complete and sell. Cost is based on the cost of purchase on a FIFO basis. Finished goods include labour costs and attributable overheads. At each balance sheet date, stocks are assessed for impairment. If an item of stock is impaired, the carrying amount is reduced to its selling price less costs to complete and sell. The impairment loss is recognised immediately in profit or loss. l. Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits with financial institutions repayable without penalty on notice of not more than 24 hours, other highly liquid investments that mature in no more than three months from the date of acquisition and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts, where applicable, are shown within 'Creditors: amounts due within one year'. m. Trade debtors Trade debtors are amounts due from customers for merchandise sold or services performed in the ordinary course of business. Trade debtors are recognised initially at the transaction price. They are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less provision for impairment. A provision for the impairment of trade debtors is established when there is objective evidence that the company will not be able to collect all amounts due according to the original terms of the receivables. n. Trade creditors Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of business from suppliers. Accounts payable are classified as current liabilities if the company does not have an unconditional right, at the end of the reporting period, to defer settlement of the creditor for at least twelve months after the reporting date. If there is an unconditional right to defer settlement for at least twelve months after the reporting date, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at the transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method. o. Share capital Ordinary shares are classified as equity. Equity instruments are measured at the fair value of the cash or other resources received or receivable, net of the direct costs of issuing the equity instruments. If payment is deferred and the time value of money is material, the initial measurement is on a present value basis. 9
