The company is dormant and has not yet traded due to the impact of the cost-of-living crisis and its subsequent impact on the business and revenue model. The company was established to administer and operate Ofcom’s Llandudno and Betws-y-Coed digital radio small scale multiplex and facilitate community orientated broadcasters and small-scale local services. However, the significant increase in energy prices and the cost of operating the transmitters on two separate sites, with a subsequent increase in site rental and other associated overheads has meant that the project has paused. The partner company, proposing to supply the transmitter has experienced a significant upturn in costs both in relation to this project and their core business. Furthermore, the number of community radio services required to share the costs of operations has fallen from the initial expressions of interest at company launch and currently total operational costs outweigh the revenue available to sustain the service. It is the company’s intention to proceed when it is economically prudent to do so and when it can be determined with a high level of probability, that the participating community broadcasters have the means and resources to sustain their services during the contracted period of operation with Sound Bay Community Digital CIC. It is envisaged that that by facilitating the broadcasting of affordable community radio in the near future (and when economically viable once again), we will provide an important ‘social action’ platform for third sector and voluntary groups to improve the quality of life of local people and support the most vulnerable and isolated, for example. New services can provide a broader range of listening to everyone including under-served audiences/ communities of interest. This will endeavour to provide a platform for marginalised, often unheard voices and the increased promotion of the Welsh language and local culture. There has been no consultation with stakeholders due to the dormant status of the company.
