We continue to provide weekly basketball sessions for ages 5-11yo, these are outside April to October to enable local children to walk to the sessions. In winter we use a local sports centre. This is all run by 2 volunteers, with parents helping out if required. We still average about 10-15 players per session, with a total of about 30 different children attending. We now have 2 children who play in league teams in another local club – that we facilitated them attending. A number of the children who attend have SEND issues, and we have seen them grow in there ability to manage overwhelm and difficult situations, with our support. They benefited from the smaller groups, and we also saw children supporting each other. At Easter we did fundraising at a village fete, which some of the children helped with. It also increased our profile in the village and gained us some new players. We ran a competition and the money raised enabled us to buy new equipment (balls, bibs, cones, whistles etc) At Christmas we had a party and gave them presents.
As well as continuing to do the below this year we were approached by 3 local companies wishing to sponsor us. We discussed with the parents what they would like to use this money for and they chose to use it to order a kit for the team – which the children would get free. We also asked the children if they would like to compete as a team in local league and most said no – just play for fun. We communicate with parents through a facebook page and whatsapp group and are continually asking for feedback and suggestions, additionally we have good contact with the parish council and other local sports groups. Some of these discussions are around how we can help children with any development needs, and then we can incorporate that into our sessions. During the sessions we also encourage the children to choose what activities they would like to do, to lead some and collaborate with what we do. Parents decided on paying monthly, and when we move indoors. We also get regular enquires about children wanting to play sport or get active and join clubs. We have good contact with a local basketball club who run more events than us, as well as a number of teams, and our children are encouraged to attend their camps and community events, with an option to progress to teams. Providing a local session to see their interest, often with children they know, can make it easier for them then to attend a bigger club.
